Turner & Hooch Review: A Good Day To Dog Hard (Season 1 Episode 2)

Reviews, Turner & Hooch

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 2, “A Good Day to Dog Hard,” is another fun episode, but it’s nothing special. It will entertain you and make you laugh, but it’s not as great as it could be.

Case-wise, Turner & Hooch plays to its strengths by not making it one that involves a lot of investigative work. It’s Scott and Hooch reacting to a hostage situation, so the focus is more on them learning to work together in order to take down the bad guys.

It’s what the show needs because the main goal of the case is to further develop the relationship between Scott and Hooch. Scott’s still learning how to work with and understand Hooch, and the hostage situation allows us to see that happen without too much case stuff getting in the way.

Turner & Hooch Season 1 Episode 1, “Forever and a Dog,” did too much by throwing in a case that required some investigating along with Scott working with Hooch. “A Good Day to Dog Hard” learns from that mistake by simplifying the case.

Even though there’s no need to investigate to discover who the bad guys are, Scott comes across as a lot smarter than he did on “Forever and a Dog.” We see him coming up with clever solutions to knock out the cameras without being seen and taking out each individual bad guy.

It would have been nice to touch more on why the fake caterers did what they did, but aside from that, the case of the week is okay. Hopefully, as the series progresses, we will get to see Scott and Hooch take on a bit more elaborate cases.

I’m liking that Laura working with Scott on their dad’s old case. It allows for some brother/sister bonding, and we get to see a different side of Scott.

There’s still this distance between us and Scott, at least I think so, where it is hard to completely fall in love with him or root for him. I’m hoping that by spending time with Laura, we will get to know Scott a bit better and connect with him more. Plus, Lyndsy Fonseca is amazing, and she deserves more air time.

Okay, back to their dad’s old case. All this episode accomplishes is hinting that there may be something more to their father’s death. There’s not a lot of suspense or intrigue built, but it does get Scott to take Laura and this case seriously. It’s progress, albeit not that much.

Let’s hope this case picks up speed. It would be great to have a compelling season-long investigation brewing.

Stray Thoughts
  • Hooch definitely would earn an invite to my tea party. Scott would not.
  • Erica is growing on me; she’s not as annoying during this episode.
  • Xavier and Jessica are a fun pair.
  • I’d love to see more of Scott actually going through training with Hooch.

Allison is in a love affair with television that doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Slightly damaged fictional characters are her weakness. She loves to spend her free time curled up with a cat and a show to binge-watch. Allison is a Tomatometer-approved critic (Rotten Tomatoes).
