The Bold Type Review: The Crossover (Season 5 Episode 2)
It’s time for the ad sales conference on The Bold Type Season 5 Episode 2, “The Crossover.” It is slightly more successful than the retreat on The Bold Type Season 5 Episode 1, “Trust Fall,” because we actually see a little bit of the event.
Watching Jane take responsibility for the retraction of the exposé on “States & Nations” and Mark Afton is satisfying. She cannot control the fact that her sources lied, so as a writer it’s easy to empathize with her plight.
But as a leader and head of a vertical, she needs to step up and own her mistakes. Jane is growing into a boss and that is beautiful to see.

However, we can never ignore the fact that The Failing Feminist’s existence will always be weird. Why does a feminist magazine need a feminist vertical led by a white woman? Also, if I have to hear that Jane is the future of “Scarlet” one more time I’m going to scream.
It is such a shame that The Bold Type has never found a way to get Kat back at the magazine. She is the future we need to see.
Her social media video making lemon loaf with Zuri to show the world that incarcerated people re-entering society have fewer resources to work with than anyone else is genius.
It is equally as important as holding Mark Afton responsible for his actions. Kat may have a big social media following but it is not the same as having the “Scarlet” platform. The Bold Type only has four more episodes left, so we probably will not see Kat’s return.

But let’s be real, Kat’s talent is wasted at an uppity members-only bar — even if she does have a podcast.
Speaking of new jobs, Alex’s status is confusing. “The Crossover” gives off mixed vibes about whether it is Matt Ward’s final episode or not.
We called Ryan “Pinstripe” for years. So, moving floors at Safford doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll never see Alex again. He even says as much to the girls.
If it is Alex’s last episode, we should have been shown that more clearly. If it is not, well then, the staff basketball game is a cute goodbye.
Either way, the storyline with Alex helping Joey get his job back is a waste of time. Good white men make mistakes and if no physical harm is done or laws are broken, perhaps they do deserve to rebuild their lives in some cases.

But a debate about cancel culture exists because these men have skated by for years without consequences.
The Bold Type wastes valuable screen time showing us a Black man helping a white man get his reputation back. Joey may deserve it, but the choice will always be baffling.
We need to move on to someone who deserves our attention and lots of hugs. Poor, naive Sutton.
Looking back at The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 15, “Love,” the way Richard leaves is totally unfair, whether their marriage is going to survive or not.
Before Season 5, I remember having similar, confusing, thoughts as Sutton about whether Sutton and Richard were headed for divorce or not.

Now that we are saying our final goodbyes, I’m more at peace with the end of Sutton’s marriage. Hopefully, she’ll reach a similar place soon.
We know Richard will make an appearance in the final season, but there is not enough time for them to logically compromise on their futures before The Bold Type ends.
“The Crossover” is a step in the right direction, but we hope the best of The Bold Type is still to come.
