The Bold Type Review: Rolling Into The Future (Season 5 Episode 3)

Reviews, The Bold Type

It finally feels like we’re moving in a unique direction on The Bold Type Season 5 Episode 3, “Rolling Into The Future.” The only question is — with three episodes left in the series, is it too late?

Jane’s life as a boss takes an unexpected turn, and it’s hard to be mad about it.

As soon as she gets her feminist vertical at the feminist magazine (no I will not let it go, yes it’s also weird that Sage is just now getting a sex vertical), she forgets about Addison. It’s good to see that The Bold Type actually remembers the character and is holding Jane accountable for her poor mentorship.

The scene that Jane lets Addison run the pitch meeting is so cringeworthy, it’s a relief that this is acknowledged. The Bold Type doesn’t know this, but Jane is awkward because she is not ready to be a boss.

When we meet her on The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” she’s starting a new job as a writer at “Scarlet.” Character growth is vital on any show, especially for a lead, but I still do not feel like she has earned her spot.

The writers she oversees are more accomplished than she is in some ways. How else would Addison get another job offer so quickly? (I resent the implication that it’s at all easy to get a job in journalism.)

All of this to say that Scott quitting and the decision to end their relationship before it’s begun is a rare, refreshing, unexpected twist.

Now, at least two of our ladies might not find their happily ever after in love, and that is worth drinking to. Jane is being groomed as the next Jacqueline, which is worth an eye roll. But I’m not mad that Scott probably will not be at her side.

Of the bold three, Kat deserves the world. She might just be allowed to have and keep her love for Adena, which is necessary for keeping the fabric of The Bold Type honest to the end.

There are some relationships on TV that are more than just endgame, they are destiny. Kadena is one such example.

It’s also quite a relief to see them doing activism together that feels organic for each of them. They do not make out or express feelings and they even have to deal with Adena’s mom, but there is still a sense of peace about this millionth reunion.

Maybe that’s because Kat is finally rebelling a little bit against The Bell by projecting the pictures of Zuri and her friends onto the building.

I will never understand The Bold Type‘s choice to have Kat leave “Scarlet.” I will not forgive it for choosing to have her work at an elitist (but inclusive?) exclusive bar. It’s gross.

The fact that Kat says The Bell is part of the problem definitely gives this episode points.

Adena’s mom also adds a nice layer to everything. Through her, it’s easy to understand both the extreme activist side of Adena that rebels boldly and the side of her that wants stability and commitment.

It’s hard to take any of this new information too far with three episodes left of the series, but we can just be thankful Adena is single.

As for Sutton’s bowling party, it’s cute but why is she so insistent that she is okay? If we are all being honest here, she and Richard have not been married long at all and even though kids have been a big issue for them, he bails rather quickly.

To borrow words from Demi Lovato, it’s okay not to be okay, Sutton.

It’s also okay to be okay. But her husband tells her he wants a divorce through a proxy and she’s protesting too much. Sutton is not okay.

Do you know what’s also not okay? Your two “best” friends not telling you they think your wedding dress is ugly on the day you are shopping for wedding dresses. But I digress, the wedding dress destruction scene is cute.

The Fine Print
  • This Long Island girl (who really wants off of Long Island) wants you to know that some of us are cool.
  • Are we just going to assume that Jaqueline knows Andrew’s salary but is not exactly in tune with the cost of living for “the little people” in Manhattan? Okay, then.
  • Everyone sure is weird with Sutton. Why would you let someone else’s divorce affect what you pitch at work?
  • Jasper is back! Yay!
