Everything We Know So Far About ‘Big Brother’ Season 23

Big Brother, Previews

The wait is almost over. The reality competition series Big Brother will be back for its 23rd installment in July. After a lack-luster All-Star season last year, we are excited to get back to a summer filled with competitions, floaters, backstabbing and showmances.

Here is what we currently know about Big Brother Season 23 which premieres July 7th at 8/7c on CBS with a special 90-minute episode.

Julie Chen will return as host

Julie Chen has been a staple on Big Brother since it premiered in 2000. Her future seemed uncertain after her husband Les Moonves had a very public falling out with CBS in 2018 as reported by The Washington Post. During the turmoil, Chen left her post at The Talk, but did continue her Big Brother duties.

Chen returned for the series in 2019 and 2020 and has been promoting the new season on her social media accounts. Big Brother would not be the same without Julie ‘Chenbot’ Chen hosting each live eviction episode.

It would be great if Chen would appear more than once a week as host. A fun way the network could do this is by having Chen recap the previous episode instead of using the voice over. If Chen isn’t available, may we suggest former fan-favorite houseguest Janelle for this job?

Normal airing schedule will resume

With so much drama in the Big Brother house, CBS usually airs three episodes a week. This season will continue that trend with airings on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Unlike past seasons, each episode will now air at 8/7c, according to TV Insider.

Having all episodes at the same time is a smart move for CBS. It is easier for fans to remember when the show is on to help increase live viewing of each episode.

But is 8:00 PM too early for Big Brother? At times, the content can be a little too ‘adult’ for that early in the evening. However, it is definitely more friendly than CBS’ other summer reality show Love Island. The show is more tame than a lot of other shows on during that time.

No returning houseguests

Parade Magazine reports that the cast this year will feature individuals who have never played the game before. CBS also promises more diversity in the players along with their other reality series Survivor and Amazing Race. Though no former houseguests will be playing the game, we think one or two may pop up throughout the summer.

There are a few former houseguests that we would love to see. Victor and Nicole are now married and expecting a baby, Rachel and Brendan are always happy to appear, and Jeff and Jordan have been know to pop up on occasion. The best would be a reunion of Janelle and Kaysar, the alliance that never got the chance to flourish on Big Brother All-Stars.

New tagline

As we already mentioned, Julie Chen is promoting the new season like crazy on her social media accounts. She provided us with a new tagline ‘Go Big or Go Home’ on her Twitter account last week.

Hopefully, this means that houseguests actually have to play the game or face consequences by sitting back and watching everything unfold. Big Brother is known to have ‘floaters’ every season that end up coasting to the finals. That is just not entertaining television.

Another trend in recent seasons is the Head of Household selects nominees for eviction based on what the entire house wants.

Again, this is not exciting to watch. CBS is probably very aware that it can get boring for us fans and wants to help eliminate that through this new twist. Well, we can at least hope that is the case.

Contestants will be divided into teams

Parade reports that like some previous seasons, the 16 houseguests on Big Brother 23 will be placed into teams. This will be the first time that the teams are not selected by production beforehand. Four captains will select their teams from pre-recorded clips.

This twist is a welcoming one because these houseguests will only be able to base their picks on a 90-second video, whereas production has interviewed the houseguests numerous time before making their selections for the teams.

We guess that athleticism will come into play when captains choose teams, which may be a good tactic for winning competitions.

Live Feeds are back

Sometimes three episodes a week just isn’t enough for us Big Brother fans. TV Insider confirms that the Live Feeds will be available on CBS’ new subscription service Paramount+, formerly knows as CBS All Access. There is a free trial option before purchasing the service.

Hopefully, the live feeds will not be cut so much, which makes purchasing them a waste. It tends to always happen at the best part of a heated conversation. As soon as the yelling begins, the screen cuts to a fish tank.
