A Black Lady Sketch Show Review: My Booty Look Juicy, Don’t It? (Season 2 Episode 4)
Blippity, blippity, the Coral Reefs need a vacation on A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 2 Episode 4, “My Booty Look Juicy, Don’t it?”
Once again, it’s the creativity that makes this show so fun to watch. Even in an episode that feels just ok, the unique, witty tone of the comedy raises its quality.
The best sketch shows are built on their recurring skits. What makes A Black Lady Sketch Show different is that it delivers returning favorites in new ways.

The Coral Reefs gang is back, and like every organization, they need a self-care retreat. It’s the awkward work retreat everyone hates, but with Gabrielle Dennis hilariously forcing her employees to relax.
The writing for the show is so clever, we don’t always give credit to how good the physical comedy is. This episode gave us Dennis bouncing from one woman to the next at the retreat, Laci Mosley as a Fairy Aunt Mother, and Skye Townsend as pop star Nona Love, taking a comedically dangerous fall off the stage.
All striking just the right tone, bringing funny new levels to their characters. It’s also great how unexpected the physical comedy is. We never get an obvious pratfall. They’re always a fun, out-of-the-blue moment.

At the end of the world, everyone is still totally suspish of Skye, until she reveals she’s been hiding the communications system so they wouldn’t leave her. It’s a sweet scene, that of course ends with the payoff that her last name is Jiminion.
Just when we think we know what’s going on post-apocalypse, we get a left turn into Skye not knowing how last names work. Plus, we know for sure that no one else is out there, including poor Kevin.
The best sketch of the night goes to the Fairy Aunt Mother. Aging is hard. Especially when turning 35 means heading into auntie land. Thankfully, eating a fairy keeps you young, and saves you from Tupperware in your purse and Tom Joyner cruises.

This is the comedy we can only get from A Black Lady Sketch Show. It’s made by Black women, for Black women. The references to becoming an auntie, and all that encompasses are unapologetically, authentically Black.
Sure, other late-night shows could do a sketch about being a middle-aged Black woman, but it wouldn’t come from a real place and would likely miss the mark badly.
As much as we love the show, it’s not perfect. Pop star Nona Love falling off the stage and dying while her fans kept singing felt incomplete. We’re not sure what the joke is, because it seems like something is missing.

Were we supposed to be laughing at the fans not really knowing the words, their blind devotion to Nona, or her fall? Honestly, we just don’t know.
Normally it wouldn’t matter what network a show airs on, but being on HBO gives A Black Lady Sketch Show freedom that it uses to highlight funny Black stories.
This would be a moot point if the show didn’t use its free pass to create space for the Coral Reefs, Ally, the friend who hypes you up too much, and five Black women as the last people on Earth.
