Call Me Kat, Reviews

Kat is faced with tough decisions about motherhood on Call Me Kat Season 1 Episode 7, “Eggs.”

An appointment with her gynecologist has Kat thinking she may need to freeze her eggs if she wants kids. It sounds crazy for such an absurd show to tackle a sensitive subject, and that’s because it is.

I thought the comedy and charm of Call Me Kat’s cast would be able to bring levity to and normalize talking about women’s reproductive issues, but I was wrong.

Instead of using the show’s over the top nature to highlight how difficult fertility issues can be, the series backs away from any conversations that become too serious and gives us Kat using a pillow to try out being pregnant.

I’m not saying we need “a very special episode,” but this is a chance to show Call Me Kat can be more than pratfalls and double entendres. It turns into a huge missed opportunity.

All the questions Kat asks about the stress on her body, the cost of the procedure, and whether it will even work are valid.

I would have enjoyed a half-hour that left some of the show’s usual shenanigans on the shelf, in favor of a lighter comedic touch that feels more authentic.

This is a chance for Call Me Kat to showcase its potential and convince people to keep watching. Instead, we get an episode that leans so heavily on slapstick, it will probably lose the fans that have stuck with it this long.

On top of everything, Kat has a date with a delivery man who’s been interested in her for a while but ruins it with her pillow stunt. By the end of the episode, she is back to pining for Max.

We like Kat, but watching her constantly self-sabotage by always going way over the top is becoming tedious. When a character never learns from her mistakes, it makes it hard for us to keep rooting for her.

Thankfully, we finally get more Carter, as he helps Phil navigate online dating.

I would love to see Carter and Phil become the show’s go-to comedy team. The way Carter is so supportive of Phil as he gets over his breakup is one of the show’s best elements and should be highlighted more.

The series has such a strong cast, it would be nice to see them pair off into unexpected groupings more often. Right now we tend to get the same two or three characters in scenes together, and maybe one or two full ensemble scenes.

This may not sound important, but it contributes to the show’s predictability problem.

When you watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Goldbergs, or Superstore, you might have an idea of where the episode is going, but you have no idea how you’re going to get there.

From the moment we read the synopsis we know “Eggs” will include a fake pregnancy gag and several jokes about insemination. Nothing that happens is surprising.

There has never been more TV to choose from, which means people aren’t going to hang around for a comedy that delivers uncomfortable, unfunny outings like this one.
