Legacies Review: Goodbyes Sure Do Suck (Season 3 Episode 2)

Legacies, Reviews

Legacies Season 3 Episode 2, “Goodbyes Sure Do Suck,” is an emotional episode, to say the least, as the Salvatore school prepares to say goodbye to one of its students for good.

“Goodbyes Sure Do Suck” is a perfect title for this week’s episode as Hope, Landon, and the rest of the school do everything in their power to prevent Rafael from falling fate to the necromancer’s spell.

With the necromancer’s curse on Landon, Chad, Rafael, and Alyssa, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to see that this was coming after Chad’s untimely demise. I guess I figured that we’d have one or two more episodes before seeing Rafael kick the bucket. However, that does not mean that I don’t enjoy the episode.

What I love about “Goodbyes Sure Do Suck” is how the episode revolves around Rafael and what he wants. No unnecessary action or drama occurs once the consensus has been made that there’s nothing else to do.

The storyline around Rafael’s death could’ve included dangerous scenarios where he and his friends have to fight some foe to save his life, which would not be out of the ordinary for Legacies. Instead, it focuses primarily on how he wants to say goodbye, and we get to see all of the good and the sad as it plays out.

Rafael is given a meaningful, well-thought-out goodbye that offers him the chance to say his farewells, and I’m grateful it’s how the episode plays out. It’s beautiful. He gets to live the rest of his life in his own form of heaven with his mother and father, and I don’t know that I could’ve asked for a better send off.

Reuniting Rafael with his birth mother in his most dire time of need and then allowing him to live a peaceful life with her and his father is not a scenario that I would’ve envisioned happening, but I’m happy that it did.

Hopefully, with the three of them only being in the prison world and not dead yet, we’ll get to see Rafael again. One can only hope that they find a way to bring him back to the living plane again.

Storyline wise “Goodbyes Sure Do Suck” does an impeccable job of breaking down where we could potentially move from this point, especially now that they know Landon is no longer a phoenix. Without his reincarnation ability, Landon is a full-fledged mortal, or so they think, which changes how they’re allowed to move in the future. With one last mortal life, there’s no way anyone will take the chance of having him help them.

I don’t think this is the end for Landon and Hope, but I believe Landon needs to step back and thoroughly think through what he wants to happen because, being a human at the school, he could have a bigger target on his head. His feelings, however, are justified because, as his girlfriend, Hope did nothing to reassure him that things were going to be okay.

I love what’s happening with the dynamic because Alyssa has always had the HBIC attitude, so now that she also gets to incorporate her nasty side, she’s thriving. As I mentioned in my last review – if Alyssa is going to be evil, I want her to go all out, and that’s what she’s planning on doing.

“Goodbyes Sure Do Suck” was written by Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes. Eric Dean Seaton directed the episode.
