Filthy Rich Review: James 4:1 (Season 1 Episode 8)
The general lesson we’ve learned from Filthy Rich Season 1 Episode 8, “James 4:1,” is that no matter how soapy the drama, when all is said and done it’s pretty boring to watch white men weave their spiderwebs around everyone with few consequences.
We’ve known that Reverand Paul is not to be trusted from early on in this tale. And we should’ve expected Luke’s murder, no matter that his investigation has been moving too slowly to be entertaining.
He dies knowing too much about powerful white men’s secrets. He should’ve been more careful.

But it’s still sad. We’ve been looking forward to the story that Luke was working on with Eugene’s help. Plus, being that he’s arguably the only character outside of the Monreaux family or their inner circle, Luke is the only genuinely good character on Filthy Rich.
The others struggle with the questions posed in the titular Bible verse, James 4:1:
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?
We’re definitely worried about Becky. But her current state is more of a plot device than anything else. So let’s talk about the desire she’s battling within her.
We’ve previously discussed how happy we are that she’s slowly learning to accept her sexuality. The fact that she’s Paul’s sister also means that she’s going to need help to escape him. Ginger is the perfect person to help her do that.

But that doesn’t mean we ship Ginger and Becky. Ginger is a good choice for her first sexual experience with a woman and they have a little bit of chemistry. We’re just skeptical of the domestic bliss and/or monogamous relationship they’re planning in their heads.
Our gut feeling is right, considering that Hagamond Sheen (and his handlers) seem to have it out for babies on this episode.
Abortion is a difficult decision for every woman to make, but considering everything going on in her family we support Rose’s decision to have one. And we’re impressed that Margaret decides to put her own beliefs aside and accompany her daughter on the trip to New York to get one.
As for Mark, if I liked him more I’d concede that his desires should be considered — but I don’t. Rose simply isn’t ready to have a child, so that’s that.
Hagamond casually walking to his car with Jesus is proof that the Monreaux’s and their crew cannot be trusted to care for children.

Of course, I want the child returned to them safely. But Filthy Rich has slowly tipped the scales to become too soapy to get too invested in.
Most everything that happens is simply a plot device on this episode, and we’re not expecting that to change as we approach the series finale.
Hopefully, a few of the good eggs escape Reverand Paul’s clutches and spend their money well.
Prayer Notes:
- I’m not sure if a Christian Pay Per View network or said network broadcasting a boxing match is more ridiculous.
- Yopi and Antonio have a very strange relationship for a mother and son.
- Becky warning Eric about Paul is the best scene of the episode.
