The Bold Type Review: Lost (Season 4 Episode 13)

Reviews, The Bold Type

The definition of a “loss” is about as personal for everybody as the grief that comes after it. So, while Sutton arguably experiences the most significant tragedy on The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 13, “Lost,” every character’s journey is valid and compelling to watch.

The reality is, what some women would consider a loss, Sutton finds to be a relief. Her grief comes from feeling like a bad person for being relieved after a miscarriage and we need to talk about that because I have never seen a story like this on TV.

Sutton’s feelings are so affirming for every woman who has no desire to be a mother. Sure, it’s going to be hard to walk through these feelings with Richard now, but seeing them navigate this huge bump will be equally as necessary to watch.

Sutton has always been career-focused. That’s why she’s still living in Manhattan. She and Richard have been working through similar issues to this for the whole series. Their age difference really does impact their goals.

It’s surprising that I don’t recall Sutton being as averse to kids as she is right now, but maybe she changed her mind. Frankly, changing our opinions about anything we damn well please needs to be normalized in society…so, no matter what, she’s a trailblazer.

The stages of romance still feel like traps to some people. Marriage follows love. Babies follow marriage, and then women are expected to prioritize their identity as a “mother” above all else.

Sutton and Richard are potentially hitting more than a rough patch, and the speed at which they married might make the impact of Sutton’s confession worse.

It’s not even necessary to cross your fingers for a good outcome here. Whatever ending The Bold Type eventually chooses will be important viewing. Hopefully, Jane and Kat will hold Sutton tight. This ride she’s on is already moving incredibly fast.

One could argue that Kat’s life is crumbling faster.

It’s a valid point, but at least she has Connie the couch thanks to Jane — and a place to live thanks to Jane. She’s also well on her way to starting a podcast thanks to Alex.

It’s the best job I could possibly think of for her and hopefully being a Belle bartender and interviewing members will always be the hook.

I’m inherently skeptical of The Belle’s existence on the show. I don’t really know what to make of a club for “rich” or “innovative” liberal women yet.

But, Kat is meeting so many strong women like Ava already. Whether these conversations are a catalyst to change or not, they need to be had. If we don’t have them,  even via a TV script, there is no potential for change at all.

We definitely need to start hearing from victims as much as possible, so hopefully, The Bold Type is heading in that direction.

Even though Penny is doing amazing work with the domestic violence shelter, her sister is the victim. If we don’t meet the sister who has lived through all of the pain, it will be as effective as Kat’s storyline about conversion therapy being the reason she has lost her job.

Pain is a catalyst for connection, and without seeing the pain, it’s hard for us to care.

All of that to say, hopefully we meet Penny’s sister and other women who have lived through pain on Kat’s podcast. If we don’t, it will be an ineffective plot device.

Similarly, while it’s exciting to see Jane find her “double mastectomy people” and talk about her disconnection to her body — (which will help so many women feel seen) — I hope it leads to her connecting to her late mother somehow, too.

The Bold Type is slowly finding its stride in the second half of the season, and it’s quite a shame that it’s going to be cut short eventually.

Right now, there are still a few more episodes to watch, and while all of the characters have some kind of privilege and their struggles to “find” a destination that is right for them are more than relatable — they are necessary conversations that more TV should be having.

Cheers to seeing The Bold Type‘s “bold” come through again, even if it took a lot of tears to get there.

The Fine Print

  • Jaqueline’s storyline still feels slightly unnecessary but at least on this episode it provides a little bit of levity.
  • Maybe Alex really is just the perfect friend to the bold three.
  • This show does a pretty good job at weaving past stories into current episodes.
