Preview — Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 Episode 2: Know Your Onions

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 7 Episode 2, “Know Your Onions,” grapples with the realization that in order to stop one foe from destroying the agency’s future, they may have to save another from its past.

And it’s not just any foe, they have to save Hydra!

That’s right. On top of already having some serious baggage, young, ignorant, (and irritably handsome) Freddy turns out to be the future father of Hydra’s very own co-founder Gideon Malick, and Chronicoms latest target. His unfortunate procreating will lead to the world’s most evil leaders attempting to take over the world — a dozen times over.

I am of course talking about Red Skull, Agent Ward, Alexander Pierce, and so on. The bad guys who have hidden amongst the Nazis for most of World War II and who infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades before finally bringing the organization to its knees.

The very villains who become the catalyst for one of Marvel’s finest masterpieces, The Winter Soldier, and who have a big hand in helping Cap orchestrate the greatest elevator fight scene in film history. They also throw Bucky off the side of a moving train and kill countless others during Coulson’s time as Director — they’re kinda the worst.

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that S.H.I.E.L.D and Hydra’s fate is so closely intertwined given how many times their values and operatives have overlapped. Unfortunately, that realization doesn’t make the notion of saving this undercover Nazi organization any easier for the agents going into “Know Your Onions.”

Daisy, Mack, and LMD Coulson (who, let’s be honest, might just be the best version yet of our beloved agent) will find themselves fighting not only the Chronicoms, but each other as the team wrestles with the idea of pulling the trigger on a young boy and letting their legacy bleed out with him.

On top of that heavy decision, Yo-Yo and Simmons will attempt to reenter the field and May will do whatever she feels like because she’s awake now, and frankly she’s been through a lot. 

One thing is for certain. If the Chronicoms manage to cut off the head of Wilfred Malick, none shall be likely to take his place, not even one as stubborn as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s.

The Avengers have always had the infinity stones and Thanos to work towards but this — saving Hydra to save S.H.I.E.L.D. — that feels much more like the endgame Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been working towards.

Hail Hydra? I guess only time will tell…
