Zoey is leveling up and helping someone outside her friends and family for the first time on Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 9, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Silence.”
Up until now, the people Zoey has helped or attempted to help with her musical powers have been limited to friends, family, and co-workers, but on “Zoey’s Extraordinary Silence,” Zoey will try to help Mitch’s new caregiver Howie reconnect with his daughter.
To be fair, Howie isn’t anywhere close to a stranger, but he is still a relatively new person in Zoey’s life and one still far enough outside of her inner circle for this to feel different. It’s also the inevitable progression of the story.
As Zoey gets more comfortable with her powers, it seems natural that she would start being drawn to people she is initially less emotionally invested in, and if the story is about building empathy, it has to expand beyond family and friends or what’s the point. “Zoey’s Extraordinary Silence” looks like it will be the first step for Zoey in that direction.
Another element of note about this story with Howie is that his daughter is deaf (played by Sandra Mae Frank, who is deaf in real life), and for whatever reason, that seems to be part of the disconnect between Howie and his daughter. The promo hints that a significant part of the episode will focus on the experiences of Howie’s daughter as well.
There aren’t many stories on TV about deaf characters, and it’s exciting to see what Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will do with this one.
