The Magicians Canceled After Five Seasons

The journey has come to an end for the Brakebills students on The Magicians. 

Syfy has announced that The Magicians Season 5 will be it’s last. The season finale, scheduled to air on April 1st, will now serve as the series finale. 

“The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons. As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers, and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever,” the network said in a statement obtained by TV Line.

This cancellation is somewhat shocking, but perhaps not entirely unexpected. Historically the series has received early renewals including when Variety reported the renewal for Season 5 a day before the premiere. 

In the eight episodes of Season 5 that have aired so far, the series has averaged 341,000 total viewers with just over a 0.1 demo rating when Live+Same Day numbers were counted. These ratings are down 42 and 37 percent from Season 4 which averaged 0.19 rating in the demo and 541,000 viewers.

Currently, the series stars Stella Maeve as Julia Wicker, Summer Bishil as Margo Hanson, Hale Appleman as Elliot Waugh, Olivia Taylor Dudley as Alice Quinn, Jade Tailor as Katy Orloff-Diaz, Arjun Gupta as William “Penny” Adiyodi, Ricky Worthy as Henry Fogg, Brittany Curran as Fen, and Trevor Einhorn as Josh Hoberman.  

During The Magicians Season 4 finale, Jason Ralph, who played Quentin Coldwater departed the series.

Once The Magicians ends, Syfy’s only current scripted series will be Wynonna Earp, which recently went into production for Season 4, and Van Helsing, which the network recently renewed for a fifth and final season.

On deck for the network is the series Vagrant Queen premiering March 27th, a Child’s Play offshoot called Chucky, and Resident Alien starring Alan Tudyk.
