Wynonna Earp to Begin Production on Season 4

News, Wynonna Earp

The #FightforWynonna is won! The beloved sci-fi show has been saved! Wynonna Earp, will return for a fourth season, at it’s home on Syfy.

IDW Entertainment, announced on Twitter earlier today, in partnership with that the series is officially set to begin production on Season 4 later this year with a premiere date expected for Summer 2020.

Production on Season 4 was delayed by issues with funding at IDW Entertainment. Earlier this year, IDW said that was in danger of losing money on the show. According to Deadline, some of those difficulties stemmed from losing the international distribution deal with Netflix after the show’s first two seasons.

Cineflix Studios has come on board to co-produce, and Cineflex Rights will handle the international sales for the series upcoming season. Additionally, Syfy has agreed to pay a higher license fee for Season 4 in order to get the season made, which is a rare gesture from a network to a struggling studio.

The cash infusion has made it possible for production to begin, and IDW has made new deals with the cast to return.  Earpers can rest assured that the cast they love remains mostly intact.

The #FightforWynonna began earlier. Among their efforts, the fans rented billboards in Times Square in the winter and spring. The campaign’s tone mirrored that of the show’s main character, a descendant of demon-hunter Wyatt Earp who is drawn into efforts to protect her community, and the world, from a series of supernatural forces.

“The Earpers, this is all thanks to them,” showrunner Emily Andras said in an interview. “The movement they have built on kindness and inclusivity is legendary, but what I admire most is their determination to fight not only for what they want, but what they deserve. The fans showed up right when we needed them most — but then, they always do.”

Series star, Melanie Scrofano posted her reaction to the news on Twitter earlier today as well, saying “You did this, you adorable psychos!”

The start of Season 4 production comes a year after it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. A public filing from IDW Entertainment submitted on December 21, 2018, showed that Syfy has ordered two seasons of the show (Seasons 4 and 5) and remains committed to airing both.

“Syfy has never wavered in its support of Wynonna Earp, a unique and important series with some of the most passionate fans anywhere,” the network said in a statement. “To our Earper friends: Thank you for your patience and faith as we worked with our partners to ensure that Wynonna can get back to where it belongs… on Syfy.”

In addition to the renewal news, Vulture has exclusively confirmed that the series will have a panel at San Diego Comic-Con later this month. The panel will include showrunner Emily Andras, as well as actors Melanie Scrofano, Katherine Barrell, and Greg Lawson, as well as Wynonna Earp comic creator Beau Smith.

Preproduction will begin in November and cameras will roll on the Season 4 in January of 2020. Andras already has some ideas for the upcoming 12-episode season inspired by the campaign.

“The #FightForWynonna rally cry has emboldened me to incorporate even more resistance and empowerment themes into the upcoming season,” Andras said in an interview. “Without a doubt, the priority is reuniting Wynonna Earp with her dysfunctional posse of family, friends, and former foes. More than anything, our fans want to see this beloved cast of characters working and loving and living together, and that’s what we’ll aim to put onscreen.”
