Batwoman Review: Through the Looking Glass (Season 1 Episode 16)

Batwoman, Reviews

There’s a lot of sister quality time on Batwoman Season 1 Episode 16, “Through the Looking Glass,” and it’s absolutely delightful. Aside from the rescue mission and ass-kicking, Kate and Alice act like normal sisters during the hour. They even share clothes!

It’s super fun to explore this side of Kate and Alice. They aren’t antagonizing each other; they are getting along and working together. The whole team-up is just a blast.

Kate battling the Crows guards is so badass and is probably my favorite fight scene of the season so far. Kate fighting outside of her Batwoman suit somehow gives off some intense vigilante vibes, and it’s amazing. It’s a shame that the good times have to end, but Kate does, unsurprisingly, betray Alice.

It is heartbreaking to watch Alice realize that, yet again, Kate doesn’t care about her. Honestly, in that moment, you feel bad for Alice; you’re not cheering Kate on for pulling one over on her. This is a testament to Rachel Skarsten’s acting.

Kate betrays Alice out of fear, not necessarily out of a sense of right and wrong.

Kate opening up to Julia is a good first step, and hopefully, Kate will continue to let people in and let them know what she is struggling with. Not feeling guilty for killing the man who took your family from you does not put you on the same page as Alice, and Kate needs more people to tell her that.

Alice: I know I’ve made light of things, but I owe you a thank you. Thank you for killing the man who destroyed my life, destroyed our family. Do not feel guilty for what you did.

Kate: I don’t. The only thing I feel guilty about is I don’t feel guilty.

Alice: So now you’re scared you’re becoming me.

Kate: Isn’t that what you wanted?

Alice: Would that really be so awful?

It’ll be interesting to see how long Alice is actually sidelined for. I’m expecting this mysterious Coryana to pop up, resulting in Alice being back in action somehow.

Julia’s return helps add some excitement to the mystery behind who is putting hits on anyone looking into Lucius Fox’s murder. She brings a more personal element to this, not only with her connection to Kate, but also her friendship with Luke.

Speaking of the hits, let’s theorize for a minute. Someone in the Crows has to be following Jake around because otherwise, they wouldn’t know that Sophie is back in the mix.

We don’t know much about the inner workings of Crows Security, but you’d think it’d have to be someone high up or behind the scenes to authorize a hit on Jake. There’s no way a lowly peon is behind all of this.

So, who do we think is pulling the strings? Give me all your conspiracy theories!

Stray Thoughts
  • I need more of Sophie and Julia hanging out STAT.
  • Anyone else shipping Julia and Kate more than Sophie and Kate at the moment?
  • Mary continuing to show up for Luke is wonderful.
