Superstore Review: Sandra’s Wedding (Season 5 Episode 14)

Reviews, Superstore

Superstore has been building here for some time and has finally arrived. It’s Sandra and Jerry’s wedding day!

On Superstore Season 5 Episode 14, “Sandra’s Wedding,” the big day finally arrives and the Cloud 9 gang handles it in true Superstore fashion — pure chaos.

Sandra and Jerry seem to be having a good time while things fall apart around them. But the rest of the Cloud 9 gang gives into the crazy while at the wedding, and it’s one of the best Superstore episodes of the season as a result.

A chaotic wedding day is a pretty common trope, but Superstore manages to make the concept feel fresh.

First off, everyone was right to suspect that Carol might be up to something. That realization causes Dina to vet the entire wedding and miss out on a ton of maid of honor duties.

But those suspicions turned out to be founded — which grows the bond between DIna and Sandra, and makes for some great comedy.

Carol has been pretty hard to pin down over the last season or so, but it’s been pretty obvious she wasn’t going to take the wedding lying down. The way it resolves is a little bit of a letdown, but it still makes for some pretty great moments.

I do love a good laxative joke, though.

Dina: We? You just stood there with your wang in the wind

The rest of the chaos really thrives on the established characters and who we know them to be.

Garrett, for instance, only has one story for his speech and Glenn steals it for the ceremony. So in true Garrett fashion, he makes up stories for the rest of his toast. Hysterical.

Elsewhere, Amy takes over management of the wedding while Dina investigates Carol, Marcus tries to hold down the fort at the store, Mateo commiserates over his relationship and his ankle monitor,  and Jonah inspires the underpaid catering staff to quit in the middle of the wedding.

Each of them is pretty true to character, and within context of a nautical themed wedding at a western venue, is pretty hilarious too.

A lot happens on “Sandra’s Wedding,” and most of it brings the laughs in full force, making for an excellent episode. It’s a wedding in the most Superstore way possible…which is a huge compliment.

A few stray thoughts:

  • Jerry and Sandra walk down the aisle to a string quartet version of the “Hamster Dance” and I HOWLED when I heard it.
  • Is a “Saturday night ink rush” really a thing?
  • Sayid’s western outfit is fantastic.
  • “I forgot how inspiring I can be.” Jonah is the worst but in the best way.
  • Easily the best bit is Garrett’s speech, but not because of what he says. It’s because Jerry just lets it happen.
