Wynonna Earp: The Cast Celebrates the Series’ Return and Discusses What’s to Come in Season 4

New York Comic Con, Wynonna Earp

Fans of Wynonna Earp got to rejoice this summer when the series was renewed for a fourth season. The sci-fi drama has received lots of love for fans.

Stars Melanie Scrofano, Dominique Provost-Chalkley, and Katherine Barrell joined executive producer and showrunner Emily Andras at New York Comic-Con 2019 in the Hammerstein Ballroom on October 5th where they shared their love for the series and fans and teased a little bit about what’s to come in Season 4.

Here are some highlights from the Wynonna Earp panel at NYCC 2019.

The Fight For Wynonna

After being introduced, the cast took a moment to remember the fan campaign of billboards in Times Square. One of the many things fans did in an effort to make sure the show would be brought back after the production company ran into some financial trouble.

The cast each recalled where they were when the first saw the billboards.

“I wish I was in Times Square but I was in my bathroom,” Andras said. “Checking the phone. It’s the only place my kids can’t find me. I was just blown away. I was like ‘I hope someone didn’t have to re-mortgage their house for that.”

Scrofano couldn’t remember where she was, but she remembered seeing a photo in their group text and thinking that it was photoshopped.

“It took me a good week to realize that it was really happening,” Scrofano said.

Revisiting Season 4

Then, Andras talked a little bit about jumping back into writing Wynonna Earp Season 4 after putting it away for so long. She acknowledged what a special project this show is to work on.

“I’ve never taken this for granted. I hope you know me well enough to know that I am aware that this is lightning in a bottle and this cast is once in a lifetime, and this experience is a career-high that will never be topped.”

“The Fight For Wynonna really reminded me what you’re fighting for and it’s these character and these relationships and all the fun of the show,” Andras said.

Wynonna Earp Season 4 was put into production a year ago. Andras had to revisit it after the show was saved and has been very aware of the themes, characters, and relationships that have caused the show to resonate with so many fans.

Wynonna Without the Curse

Wynonna Earp Season 3 saw the end of The Earp Curse. Scrofano talked a little bit about what Wynonna would be like without the curse. Scrofano has given the subject a lot of thought and calls the prospect terrifying.

“The whole premise of the show is that she’s the heir,” Scrofano noted. “Now that she’s not, what is she? And so, what am I? It’s gonna be really interesting to see her navigate that.”

Scrofano inferred that the bonds of sisterhood would be strengthened in the absence of the curse because Wynonna will now have nothing to fight for but her little sister, Waverly.

“It’s like, ‘Oh Wynonna has to save the world. Oh, Wynonna–.’ Wynonna’s got nothing going on. Wynonna’s got to go find her baby sister,’ Scrofano said.

With the Earp curse gone, it’s almost as if the show is going back to square one, exploring other parts of their characters that didn’t come out in the first three seasons.

Barrell is especially excited for Nicole’s journey in Season 4.

“She’s stepping into a completely different chapter of her life. She’s gotten a lot of closure, I think, on her past, she’s found a new family and a father figure in Nedley, she’s stepped into a new chapter of her life with Waverly, and she’s got a brand new job essentially. I think it’s just opened the next chapter of Nicole’s life,” Barrell explained. “That’s a lot of change really quick, and it might be hard to deal with.”

Wayhaught

The last Wayhaught scene in Wynonna Earp Season 3 was something of a proposal. Yet Barrell and Provost-Chalkley both want to see the moment confirmed in another scene.

“I sort of call for a redo,” Barrell said. “I feel like I just want to confirm the moment for them. I want to make sure it was a decision made of love and not fear, and I want them to have that moment of breathing in it, rather than it feeling laced with all these other things.”

“I felt that when I read it as well,” Provost-Chalkley added.

Reconfirming the moment is also crucial since things aren’t looking good for Waverly at the moment right now either

Season 3 ended with Waverly stuck in The Garden. Provost-Chalkley talked a little bit about what might be in store for Waverly. She hopes that Nicole and Wynonna are fighting to get her back.

“I imagine from the state of Waverly when she was dragged in there that it’s not going to be all planting flowers and growing bushes. It will be rather traumatic so I imagine perhaps when she comes out of there, she might need a little bit of TLC,” Provost-Chalkley said.

Setting Up Wynonna and Nedley

Early on in the panel, Scrofano had a pitch regarding Nedley. Since Wynonna has a tendency to sleep with everyone’s dads she felt that Wynonna and Nedley would be the best match.

Jokes aside Andras did elaborate a bit about what’s in store for Wynonna and Nedley in Season 4.

“I feel like Nedley is just hot to trot, metaphorically,” Andras teased. “He’s like dropping f-bombs, his retirement has been in trouble, but is Nedley the best person to be the last person you have on your side if you’re Wynonna? I don’t know.”

While Andras did say that interesting things were in store for Nedley, she also talked about Wynonna’s state of mind going into Season 4.

“I think a lot of Wynonna’s fear is being alone,” Andras said. “I think we saw that in Season 3 when she was trapped in the ever loop with Doc and Ballsharp was torturing her. I think that that’s gonna force Wynonna into a weird headspace.”

“I think Nedley having to handle that Wynonna is going to be a lot,” she concluded.

Trading a Gun for a Sword

This coming season, Wynonna will have a different weapon at her disposal: a sword. Scrofano is not confident in her sword-wielding skills but is confident that if the sword sticks around it will work out.

“It’s like going back to Season 1. In Season 1, Wynonna didn’t know how to use the gun and it was awesome,” Scrofano said.

“If Emily decides that Wynonna is good with a sword, we’re all in trouble.”

Memories of Season 3 Guest Stars

The cast also recalled working on Wynonna Earp Season 3 Episode 7, “I Fall to Pieces.” Particularly, working with Jann Arden. Scrofano and Barrell both enjoyed working with her saying that she held nothing back.

“It was incredible to see an artist, who’s an icon in the music industry, especially up in Canada. To see someone so fearlessly dive into a different artistic medium was such a life lesson, and I was just admired that about her so much because was like ‘Whatever, if I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna do it a hundred and fifty thousand percent,” Barrell reflected.

While Arden wasn’t new to the entertainment industry she was new to the world of Wynonna Earp. Scrofano elaborated on how that affected the cast’s outlook on the episode.

“She brought this enthusiasm that I think infected that whole episode because we were seeing it through her eyes so we got to sort of go, ‘Yea, this is crazy. We’re lucky.’ And then running through snow and stuff was hilarious. There was a lot that was given to us by nature and the writing and we just showed up,” Scrofano added.

Fans also got to meet Mama Earp in Season 3. Megan Follows recurred as Wynonna and Waverley’s resurrected birth mother, Michelle. Andras is eager to have Follows come back as Mama Earp down the line.

On The Women of Wynonna Earp

Andras was asked about writing the very different female characters on Wynonna Earp. Andras said that’s part of what makes writing for this show so special. Andras talked about one scene between Wynonna, Waverly, Kevin (Anna Silk), and Mercedes (Dani Kind).

“I love that scene because it made me realize how rare it is to have four female characters in a scene with completely different voices, and completely different energy,” Andras explained.

Andras continued to talk about how much she appreciates the cast of Wynonna Earp

“They’re three amazing women, but they’re not all the same, and that’s my favorite thing about women,[that] you don’t see on TV is that we don’t all have to be the same,” added Andras. “Wynonna doesn’t have to represent all women.”

What Might Have Been

The renewal and subsequent cancellation of Season 4 was a harrowing experience for fans. The first fan question of the panel came from a fan who wanted to know what the biggest regret would have been Season 4 not come to fruition.

“For me, just not finishing the story for you. I think I would have felt awful, and I think I would have fought to do any kind of closure, like a movie, a puppet show. It’s not the same, but I probably would have tried to tell you what our plans were and how we’d want it to end,” said Andras.

Another huge regret was the thought of never having said a proper goodbye to the cast and crew.  Scrofano, Provost-Chalkey, and Barrell expressed regret at taking the end of Season 3 for granted.

“We did feel like it was a given, almost, because we put our heart and soul into Season 3, as always. It felt like we were coming back and there was no need to sort of do the whole goodbyes,” Provost-Chalkey reflected.

Fortunately, they don’t need to say goodbye, because the Earpers got Season 4 back, and now Andras and the cast will be able to show fans what happens next.

Wynonna Earp will return in 2020.
