There are only two more weeks left in 2019. It’s been a great year for television, but it looks like 2020 might be better. 

Networks are starting to reveal details about what their series will look like when they return in the new year, and several series have already been given new season orders. 

Take a look at some of the highlights from this week in our TV news wrap-up. 

Hulu has set a premiere date for Little Fires Everywhere. Deadline reports that the streamer has slotted March 18th for the drama series. Based on Celeste Ng’s novel, and starring Reese Whitherspoon and Kerry Washington, Little Fires Everywhere “… follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. The story explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood – and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster.”  The streamer also released fifteen seconds of footage. Amazon has awarded The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a fourth season, less than a week after the third season premiere. According to Deadline, the renewal comes just three days after the show received two Golden Globe nominations, for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and best actress for star Rachel Brosnahan. The series has won 16 Emmy Awards, five Critics’ Choice Awards two PGA Awards, a WGA Award, and a Peabody Award.

Ema Horvath joined Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series. Deadline exclusively reports that the actress has been added to the project as a series regular. Amazon and the actress have not commented on the news. The new series will explore storylines from J.R.R. Tolkein’s Middle Earth universe proceeding the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Pre-production for the series has geared up in New Zealand, and Amazon has already given the series an early Season 2 renewal. 

Marvel TV will be shutting its doors with the current series being folded into Marvel Studios.  Deadline reports that the TV-focused branch of the entertainment giant will complete any current projects, but not continue development on them. This includes the final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. announced its final season, which will still air. News of the closure feels like the last domino to fall. Netflix canceled all Marvel series over the course of the last year and a half, Cloak & Dagger was canceled back in October by Freeform, and The Runaways is airing its third and final season launching this week.

HBO Max has landed a series adaptation of Snow Crash from Paramount TV. In a Deadline report, the series will be based on Neal Stephenson’s book of the same name and is being produced by Michael Bacall, while will write and be co-showrunner with Angela Robinson, and Joe Cornish who will direct. The original novel came out in 1992, and tells the story of a character who in reality “…delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo’s CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he’s a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that’s striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse.” The novel previously won the British Science Fiction Award in 1993, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 1994.

Apple TV has renewed another series ahead of its premiere. According to Deadline, the eight-episode anthology comedy series Little America, which launches in its entirety on January 17th, has already gotten the go-ahead for a second season. This comes two weeks after Apple TV renewed Servant for season 2, ahead of its premiere. Little America now joined  For All MankindSee, and Dickinsonall of which have had their second seasons confirmed by the streamer.

The Good Place will say goodbye with a 90-minute series finale. Deadline reports that NBC is giving the series a block which will include the extended series finale as well as an aftershow with the entire cast hosted by Seth Meyers. The show begins Thursday, January 30th at 8:30/7:30c

Alberto Rosende has been upped to a series regular on Chicago Fire, according to DeadlineRosende’s Blake Gallo was introduced on Chicago Fire Season 8 Episode 2, “A Real Shot in the Arm,” as a potential candidate for Firehouse 51 who, originally impressed, yet frustrated colleagues. It was later revealed that Gallo wanted to become a firefighter because he lost his entire family in a fire.
