Supernatural Review: Last Call (Season 15 Episode 7)

Reviews, Supernatural

Supernatural is continuing down the road to the end. Some of their stops along the way have felt more expository and others, more emotional.

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 7, “Last Call,” leans to the side of expository, but sends a strong message about Dean and his willingness to fight for good. It also guest stars Christian Kane and has Jensen Ackles do a little singing, so that’s always a plus.

There are several purposes apparent in “Last Call.” The number one purpose is to get Dean re-motivated to fight the good fight. He spends a good part of the episode grappling with why he continues to hunt, and whether or not it’s worth the cost.

Luckily for all of us, Dean decides that it is worth it.

The second purpose of “Last Call” is to establish the connection accidentally forged between God and Sam. This of course has previously been hinted at, when Sam would have nightmares akin to Chuck’s various endings. “Last Call” officially says Sam has forged a connection with the omniscient author of the universe, and he feels…”weak.”

Really, while both expository, Dean’s story is meatier. He meets a friend (Lee, played by Christian Kane) who has gotten out of hunting and is met with some inner conflict. Dean’s conflict between whether he should give up the hunt for good, or keep fighting the good fight, is one of the more compelling journeys he’s been on during Supernatural‘s run.

Supernatural Season 15 episode 7 - Shoshannah Stern as Eileen Leahy and Jared Padalecki as Sam

Outside of Dean’s journey, the rest of the episode leans toward the expository side, which is helpful but unremarkable. Luckily, Jensen Ackles (supplemented by Kane) makes Dean’s story so compelling that it doesn’t matter.

Though while we’re talking journeys, “Last Call” illustrates some hardening on Castiel’s part. His interactions with Sergei are meant to be a hint that he’ll do whatever it takes to save Sam and Dean, and stop Chuck/God.

It also doesn’t help “Last Call” that (spoilers) Christian Kane’s Lee turns out to be the bad guy. For long-time viewers, this is apparent pretty early on and doesn’t feel like much of a twist. Perhaps Supernatural is a little heavy handed in the clues, but Lee’s villainous turn is obvious after he pretends not to know the victim.

Overall, Dean’s story makes “Last Call” a compelling watch. There are elements that could be improved, sure, but “Last Call” proves both necessary to the plot and compelling, so there’s only so much more one can ask for.

A few stray thoughts:

  • There seems to be a lot of unresolved sexual tension in this episode all of a sudden. Supernatural doesn’t always go there, but they don’t shy away either.
  • It occurs to me that God wanted to be rid of Jack because they were comparable in power. If God is weak, I’m guessing the boys will try double down on trying to bring Jack back.
  • Jensen Ackles and Christian Kane sure do make a sweet musical duo. Wouldn’t say no to more of that.
  • “Dead? Yeah, I got better.”
  • I almost forgot that the third purpose of “Last Call” is just to be a vehicle to get Christian Kane on the show. Stephen Amell next? I can dream.

  • I love Supernatural. Always have. This last episode was really good I thought. I always absolutely LOVE to hear Jensen sing. He’s wonderful and I love Dean so much. To me Jensen is Dean They are one in the same, like Jared is Sam. Nobody else could ever play that part. He is perfection. I’m so sad that Spn is ending……I really can’t believe it. Thank God for Netflix. and all of the DVD’s of the show. I wish the guys a wonderful future in whatever they do. I want to see more of both of them real soon. Of course I’d rather see Sam and Dean, but I’ll take whatever I can get. Maybe Sam and Dean will ride again. I can only hope and pray. They can’t just disappear. They just can’t.
