Misha Collins Talks Final Season of ‘Supernatural’ and His ‘The Adventurous Eaters Club’ Cookbook [Exclusive Interview]

Interviews, Supernatural

Supernatural is ending after 15 seasons on the air, and the series is taking television’s most dynamic monster hunters with it. That includes everyone’s favorite trench coat wearing angel.

Castiel, played by Misha Collins, has become a staple of the series with Collins having solidified himself as a prominent spokesperson for the SPN fandom over the years. As the actor says goodbye to a beloved character, he gears up to take on a new occupation — published author.

Along with his wife Vicki, Collins is taking on the struggles of family mealtime with his new cookbook, The Adventurous Eaters Club: Mastering The Art Of Family Mealtime. He hopes to share his family’s own experiences with readers and encourage other parents to expand their children’s palates through the adventurous exploration of foods.

Collins took the time to answer a few questions about Supernatural Season 15, saying goodbye to Castiel, and the inspiration behind his new family cookbook.

Tell-Tale TV: You’ve played Castiel for nearly eleven seasons now on Supernatural. What do you think is going to be the thing you end up missing most about playing this character?

Misha Collins: The thing I’ll miss most about playing Castiel is probably the trench coat, so I plan to steal it when no one’s looking and take it home with me. (Don’t tell anyone I told you.)

Tell-Tale TV: What do you hope to see for Cas in his final days? Is there a particular milestone you would be partial to seeing him live out before the end of his journey?

Collins: I’d really like to see him live out his dreams as an Olympic pairs figure skater, but somehow I don’t think that’s in the cards for him.

Tell-Tale TV: It would seem Cas and Dean are very much still at odds despite working together to stop a zombie apocalypse. Can we expect these two to patch things up soon, or is it trouble in paradise for the foreseeable future?

Collins: The writers don’t tell me much because they know that I can’t be trusted to keep a secret. But I can speculate, and I think their current relationship is precarious, and it’ll take something really big happening to heal their divide.

Tell-Tale TV: Have you started to prepare for life after Supernatural? What’s it going to be like going to work every day and not acting alongside Jared or Jensen in a trench coat and tie?

Collins: I haven’t really started to prepare yet — I don’t think it’s completely sunk in. But I know I’ll stay in touch with many of the crew members and my close friends from the cast.

Tell-Tale TV: Is there a particular memory from the set, perhaps this season even, that will stick with you long after Supernatural is finished filming?

Collins: It’s all one long fever dream. I try to block out most of it for my own protection.

Tell-Tale TV: GISH has had an incredibly successful run over the years, positively impacting a number of communities. Not to mention all the wonderful causes the Supernatural cast and crew have supported over the years. Do you have plans to continue engaging with the Supernatural fandom after the show ends through more initiatives and charitable events?

Collins: Absolutely. We’re a family, and that’s not going anywhere. GISH is continuing — our next Hunt is August 1-8, 2020 — Random Acts is thriving, and I plan to continue to do things with the #SPNFamily for as long as they’ll stick with me.

I also plan to stream puppet-show re-enactments of key episodes out of my basement with revisionist history twists and director’s commentary, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to get the rights from Warner Bros. to pull that off.

Tell-Tale TV: Is there anything you can tease in regards to what we can expect from the rest of this final season?

Collins: I think it’ll be a lighthearted romp revisiting old characters and scenes. I’m hoping for a musical episode, an interpretive dance episode, and at least one “clip show” episode.

Tell-Tale TV: Your latest project, The Adventurous Eaters Club: Mastering the Art of Family Mealtime, is certainly a departure from your small screen endeavors and yet an exciting continuation of your online cooking segments. After years of sharing you and your children’s cooking with the world through your YouTube channel, what inspired you to finally create this cookbook?

Collins: When our kids were little, like many busy parents we found ourselves arguing with our young, picky eaters and falling into convenience patterns just to get food into our kids. But we did a little digging and realized we weren’t alone–most American kids are trained to eat only eat bland, beige foods. But it’s not like that in the rest of the world.

This cookbook is our attempt to use our own experiences and research to help other parents recalibrate their kids’ palates (and their own) in a fun, playful way that encourages kids to be courageous, curious eaters. And 100% of author profits go to charity with a focus on bringing healthy food to kids with limited access, so it’s a way we could help kids in need get a chance to learn to love healthy food, too.

Tell-Tale TV: Was there a particular food you had a difficult time getting your kids to try when you first started encouraging them to be more adventurous eaters?

Collins: We live in the Pacific Northwest much of the year, and there’s a lot of seafood up there. But it took a long time for our kids to warm up to crab. Eventually, they mustered the courage and now they love it.

Tell-Tale TV: What surprised you most about the process of creating a cookbook? Can we expect to see more cooking projects from you and Vicki in the future?

Collins: A “family cookbook” seemed like such a simple concept, so I don’t think we really knew what we were getting ourselves into. But it’s been a great bonding experience and really has given us the opportunity to try really disgusting flavor combinations as a family.

I’m not sure if more cooking projects are on the horizon, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.
