Is there hope for Burzek after all?

Chicago P.D.’s Patrick John Flueger and Marina Squerciati sat down with reporters during this year’s One Chicago press day to discuss the upcoming crossover and whether or not we’ll be seeing Burzek get back together any time soon. (Watch the full video below.)

Both Ruzek and Burgess have evolved quite a bit over the course of the show. Flueger joked that his character has dated almost every woman on the show, and Squerciati considered how her character has changed along with the series.

“I used to be sort of joyous and bubbly, and I think now she’s sort of, not hard, but tougher. A lot tougher. Which I think is good,” she said.

Flueger noted that in Season 5, the tone of the show shifted with the change in showrunners, and Squerciati believes that the Burgess of the earlier seasons wouldn’t fit as well with the show now.

Flueger and Squerciati also talked a bit about filming the upcoming One Chicago crossover event, which airs this Wednesday and deals with an outbreak of flesh-eating bacteria.

“We’ve been working every weekend. Our poor crew,” Squerciati said. “I’m just so glad that this trailer looks so cool because we put every ounce of blood that we had into this show.”

“It’s been a long month,” Flueger added. “It does look like it paid off.”

Even before special effects were added, Squerciati said that what the makeup team was able to accomplish was enough to make her think maybe her character should step aside to vomit once or twice.

“It was gross!” she exclaimed. “There were some things that I don’t need to see again.”

“It’s like a horror movie,” Flueger said.

“It is a horror movie. But awesome.” Squerciati added.

Of course, plenty of fans are curious to know if we’ll see Flueger and Squerciati’s characters getting back together as a couple any time soon. Well, it sounds like we have some good news, #Burzek fans.

“Burzek will happen again this season. So we’re excited about that,” Squerciati confirmed. “Something’s going to happen in the crossover. Whether it’s endgame or not, I don’t know. But they’ll explore something again.”

“For Ruzek, she’s just the great love of his life, you know what I mean? So whether or not they’re together, there’s just always that thing.”

Chicago P.D. airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC. The One Chicago crossover event will air Wednesday, October 16th beginning at 8/7c.
