Preview – Stumptown Season 1 Episode 1: Forget it Dex, It’s Stumptown
Dex Parios makes her TV debut this week when ABC’s new show, Stumptown, premieres on Wednesday, September 25th at 9/8 c.
Dex is already familiar to fans of the Greg Rucka comic the show is based on but even those who haven’t read the comic might find her character familiar. She the newest in a long tradition of cynical private eyes with a talent for getting into trouble, a wisecrack at the ready, and a complicated past.
Played by Cobie Smulders, Dex is one of the few women to embody the private-eye arc-type made famous by characters like Sam Spade and Phillip Marlowe (characters Rucka drew inspiration from for the comic).
She is an even rarer example of a bisexual lead on TV, all of which gives viewers a lot to be excited about before the show even premieres.
What will Dex’s first onscreen case reveal? We’ll find out soon, but if Stumptown is true to its film noir roots things won’t be what they seem, people won’t be who you expect, and there will be plenty of tongue in cheek quips and irreverent sarcasm along the way.
Episode description: Dex Parios – a strong, assertive and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt and a brother to take care of – works as a PI in Portland, Oregon. With only herself to rely on, she solves other people’s messes with a blind eye toward her own, finding herself at odds with the police and in the firing line of criminals.
