One of the season’s most anticipated new dramas is premiering soon on Fox.

Prodigal Son follows Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne), the son of a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon,” (Michael Sheen) as he uses his understanding of serial killers to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers.

The series is described as “is a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and a darkly comedic tone.”

This summer during the ATX Television Festival, we not only got the chance to preview Prodigal Son, but we also caught up with stars Aurora Perrineau and Frank Harts on the red carpet to discuss the upcoming series and learn a bit more about their characters, Detectives Dani Powell and JT Tarmel.

I think what I’m most proud of is the character development for every character,” Perrineau said about the new drama. “Everyone of us has a different kind of story.”

“It’s such a diverse crew we have at the NYPD,” Harts noted.

“When I saw these faces cast it really excited me. I’m proud of the opportunity to show, hopefully even more so, the various colors that these characters have to offer based on their backgrounds.”

Perrineau explained that her character, Dani, is a New York detective and an ex-addict.

“She’s very tough. She doesn’t mess around,” Perrineau said. “I think the thing that’s great about her is she does come from a tough background and all of that but she’s still very kind and has a lot of humanity to her.”

Harts described his character as tough too, also with a difficult background. He explained JT is a New York guy who “grew up in the hood and basically found his way into the military.”

“He did a number of tours in Afghanistan as a leader, a squad leader,” Harts added. There, he learned “not only what it means to take a life but also to save a life.”
