Killjoys Review: Ship Outta Luck (Season 5 Episode 4)

Killjoys, Reviews

Part of what makes Killjoys Season 5 Episode 4, “Ship Outta Luck,” fun is that this is a mission that’s not related to The Lady. Dutch, Johnny, and D’av aren’t trying to take her down; they are just trying to survive and break out of prison (at least initially).

“Ship Outta Luck” is a bit of a reprieve from the intense stakes that come with fighting The Lady. The Lady may be the reason Dutch, Johnny, and D’av are in this situation, but she’s not their primary target at the moment.

In fact, the prison is a space free from The Lady and her control. She bribes the warden with fruit, but that’s the extent of her reach. It’s nice to get away from her for a bit; it slows things down a bit and gives our killjoys time to recoup and scheme.

So far this season, our trio has been operating on instinct. It’s been about waking everyone up and stopping the immediate threat to Old Town. There hasn’t really been a chance to sit back and think of a plan that will end The Lady once and for all.

By the end of “Ship Outta Luck,” Dutch is starting to scheme, thinking of how she can use the prison to stop The Lady. It’s a step in the right direction, and it’ll be interesting to learn more about Dutch’s plan.

Johnny dominates during the first part of the hour.

Johnny: In your defense, we’ve all been through a lot the past few days. It was a shorter walk for you.
D’av: What about you? Losing Lucy, losing Dutch.
Johnny: I didn’t lose Dutch. She’s just temporarily locked in a cupboard.

He manages to figure the prison out pretty quickly, and he helps D’av and Dutch escape. He’s a badass, and it’s nice to see his skills featured in a pretty low-tech way.

Sure, he steals the fancy wrist thing from the guard that has the layout of the prison, but a lot of what he does is low-tech. He conducts surveillance and gives Dutch the key to her escape — a spoon.

Johnny Jaqobis, you are one crafty killjoy.

Warden: Prisoner 88456, John Jaqobis, sentenced to hard time. Seven counts of felony theft, spaceship.
Johnny: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I am offended by that accusation. I have stolen way more than seven ships.

This is also something that Johnny does himself. While all three of them make an amazing team, it’s nice to be reminded that they are all capable of getting things done by themselves every now and then.

Plus, it’s amusing to see Johnny be a little smug as he checks in on D’av in the psych ward and waves at Dutch once she breaks out.

Speaking of badasses, Zeph not only manages to save herself, but she makes some serious breakthroughs regarding how The Lady is controlling Old Town.

Zeph doesn’t rely on Dutch or anyone else to save her. She planned for the possibility that she would get wiped again, and she accounted for the fact that she might be all alone when it happens. She put a contigency plan in place, and she uses it to wake herself back up.

It’s amazing that she doesn’t wait around to be saved. Never underestimate Zeph and the power of her stinky raincoat.

Turin: Seriously, people with brains believed you were the head of the RAC?
Pree: Oh chipmunk, I hate how good I was at it.

Additionally, Zeph gets herself a team — Turin and Pree. Wow, have I missed them. It’s so great to have them back, and they really hit the ground running and manage to take out a key part of The Lady’s plan to keep Old Town under her control.

Stray Thoughts:
  • The Lady’s taking Humans 101 from Khlyen, which is a much easier course than Killing 101, which Dutch took when she was a kid.
  • It’s been far too long since we’ve seen Jaq and Delle Seyah.
  • D’av’s friend, Calvert, manages to hold her own pretty well as she fights D’av, Dutch, and Johnny at once. It’s impressive.
  • D’av and Dutch’s conversation about Johnny is HILARIOUS, but seriously, I’m all for everyone checking in on him, making sure he is okay.
