TV News Wrap-Up: Networks Announce Programming for 2019/2020 TV Season, Trailers for ‘Younger’ and ‘His Dark Materials,’ and ‘Ms. America’ Unveils Cast
It’s Upfront season, so many shows have announced their new fall programming, there are lots of trailers to be had for both summer and fall shows, and some new series are starting development.

Upfront Recaps & Scheduling
There’s a lot of returning favorites on NBC but there is also a fair share of new dramas and new comedies. NBC’s schedule boasts, “The new slate of shows adds four first-year dramas and four freshman comedies over the course of the 2019-20 season. The schedule also boasts several returning favorites and big new shows for every audience.” Check out the lineup for NBC here.

Fox’s new season keeps several fan favorites and a spin-off, as well as what will be the final season of Empire. “Today marks a new beginning for FOX Entertainment. So it is with a start-up mindset and, upon an incredible foundation of assets, that we deliver our first slate of new comedies, dramas and unscripted series,” said Charlie Collier, CEO, FOX Entertainment in a statement. ABC is also adding a handful of new programming to its repertoire. Their new lineup will include three scripted comedies, Emergence, mixed-ish, and Stumptown, as well as two dramas and a comedy set for a midseason premiere. Check out everything from the ABC Upfronts right here.

COBIE SMULDERS
CBS’s lineup will feature four new comedies, four new dramas, and 24 returning series. There will be five new dramas coming this fall including three comedies. “Our new lineup features both classic CBS shows and genres that viewers love, as well as some new series that push the boundaries of what you might expect from us,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. The CW’s 2019/2020 lineup includes fan favorites as the network rides a wave of new momentum. “The CW heads into next season riding a wave of creative momentum and expansion, with more original programming all year round, and a new Fall line-up boasting scripted series in every single time period across our six-night schedule,” said Mark Pedowitz, President of The CW. Teasers & Spoilers
The trailer for Younger Season 6 has dropped. The trailer reveals how Liza and Charles are coping with their new normal, how Kelsey is handling being the publisher at Millenial and some baby-daddy issues for Josh. Plus, there’s some dancing and ax-throwing. The sixth season of Younger premieres June 12th at 10 p.m. on TV Land.
A creepy new trailer for His Dark Materials has dropped. The official teaser trailer offers a look at the new trailer, but the series still doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
Casting News
Eleven actors were announced to join Cate Blanchett in the FX series Ms. America. According to Variety, Ms. America “tells the story of the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), and the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly, played by Blanchett. The series is slated to launch in 2020.” The lineup includes Uzo Aduba from Orange is the New Black as Shirley Chisholm, Rose Byrne as Gloria Steinem, Margo Martindale as Bella Abzug, Sarah Paulson as Alice, and Tracey Ullman as Betty Friedan.

Cancellations and Renewals
Freshman series Whiskey Cavalier has been canceled by NBC. Scott Foley posted a video to his Instagram page confirming the news and saying “We are so sad but Whiskey Cavalier will not be coming back to ABC next season. It was a tough call for the network, but ultimately they decided not to go with us. We wish them the best. I want to thank my cast and my crew for being amazing to work with. The experience we’ve had here in Prague has been wonderful for us and our family. We have made friends that we will keep forever, and I don’t know, on to the next. Thank you guys — for those who watched, thanks for watching.”

SCOTT FOLEY, LAUREN COHAN
The Bold Type has been renewed by Freeform for Season 4. Series stars Katie Stevens, Aisha Dee, and Meghann Fahy announced the happy news at the ABC upfronts earlier this week. According to Entertainment Weekly, the stars said, “On The Bold Type, we play characters who are determined to succeed in the New York fashion media business. We balance careers, friendship, and love on the daily. But this show is so important to us and our fans because regardless of who you are, we are all just trying to navigate the mess of our lives. And we are so excited to be coming back for season 4! Here’s to more bold stories, friendship, and a whole lot of rosé.”

AISHA DEE, KATIE STEVENS, MEGHANN FAHY
Miracle Workers has been renewed for Season 2 by TBS. In the freshman season of the Lorne Michael’s produced season, Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi played a low-level god and demon respectively. Entertainment Weekly reports that the pair will be back for Season 2 alongside costars Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni with an entirely new story. According to EW, Season 2 will focus on, “…a group of villagers during the Dark Ages who are trying to stay positive in a time of inequality and fake news. It’s a medieval tale about family, friendship, and trying not to get murdered.”

Fresh Off the Boat was renewed for a sixth season at ABC. According to Deadline, “The April 12th Season 5 finale of Fresh Off the Boat — which was its 101st episode — drew 3.11 million viewers and scored a 0.6/3 in the 18-49 demographic, even with its previous week’s airing. UpTV and Freeform licensed cable syndication rights to the sitcom last summer, two months before the show was eligible for syndication”

In Development
Hulu is planning a series based on Stephen King’s The Eye of the Dragon. The Stephen King fairytale will be based on a medieval fantasy kingdom where a court magician is conspiring to manipulate heirs to the throne. According to Entertainment Weekly, “The pilot is being written by Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter author and Lego Batman Movie screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, who also produced the recent film adaptation of King’s It with his KatzSmith Productions partner David Katzenberg,” Fox 21 is the studio making the project.
Things to Know
Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox is finally complete and with it, the streaming giant now has full operational control of Hulu. Entertainment Weekly reports, “After The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox assets, it is now welcoming Hulu under its far-reaching umbrella of properties in taking over full operational control.” Many of the details regarding how the merger will work in the face of the launch of Disney+ are still unknown.
