When you are in the zombie apocalypse you had better hope to have a medical professional on your side. For Rick Grimes and company that doctor is a one Hershel Greene.

At first, Hershel didn’t want to help Grimes and his crew because he knew that with them they brought an end to the life he knew and led on his secluded farm. It takes some convincing, but pretty soon Hershel and his daughters decide to join the merry group of survivors.

On The Walking Dead, no life is guaranteed and that rings true for even the truest of souls. Until the bitter end, and his death did leave fans bitter for a long time, Hershel fought to protect those he loved and cherished.

22. Dr. Juliet Burke (LOST)

Juliet Burke – LOST

The island really has multiple medical doctors inhabiting it, but the strongest of which is Dr. Juliet Burke. That’s not to say Dr. Jack Shepard isn’t a great doctor, but we prefer Dr. Burke over him.

Dr. Burke, unlike Dr. Shepard, didn’t crash onto the island, instead, she voluntarily arrived to help solve the pregnancy mystery.  This causes Dr. Shepard’s team of survivors to trust her very little, but her resolve and survival skills soon endear her to them.

She becomes so ingratiated with the team that when she is faced with a life and death choice she makes the decision to ultimately sacrifice herself. Her legacy of open-mindedness, compassion, and strength of character continues to linger in the minds of many fans.

23. Dr. Helen Magnus (Sanctuary)

Helen Magnus – Sanctuary

“Fair warning Dr. Zimmerman, you’re about to leave the world you know behind,” says Dr. Magnus as she introduces her newest protege to her facility.

Helen Magnus is not an ordinary doctor, she runs the Global Sanctuary Network where her patients come in all forms from humans to mermaids and even the elusive Bigfoot. Dr. Magnus also specializes in cryptozoology and xenobiology.

And while she’s surrounded by other-worldly creatures she’s also one of them herself.

She has the gift of longevity, making her 157 when the series begins. With that lifespan, it’s easy to see how she could accumulate so many specialties, be fluent in so many languages, and still have the life skills to delegate a global network.

24. Doc (Van Helsing)

Doc is a character in Syfy’s Van Helsing‘s who didn’t originate as a doctor. She had a medical background but worked primarily with dead bodies diagnosing their cause of death.

That was, until The Vampire Uprising. In the middle of the apocalypse Doc has to put her skills to use conducting live surgery in less than ideal settings. While it may not be ideal, at least there’s still someone with medical knowledge that tries at the end of the apocalypse.

25. Dr. Martha Jones (Doctor Who/Torchwood)

Martha Jones – Doctor Who/Torchwood

Arguably one of my own personal favorite companions on all of Doctor Who, Dr. Martha Jones is a cheerful change from the drama that is the show.

When she first gets the call to join The Doctor on his journey through space and time, she is a medical student who looks at all he has to offer with the same amount of wonder of a child in a candy store. While her time with The Doctor is very brief, it does lead her down her ultimate path towards a job at UNIT.

One of the greatest qualities of Dr. Martha Jones is her ability to always find the silver lining and to be the world’s biggest cheerleader for those that she loves. It is always a welcome presence when she shows up to help save the day.
