Shadowhunters Review: Original Sin (Season 3 Episode 12)

Reviews, Shadowhunters

Simon and Izzy scour the sewers in search of a vampire, Magnus and Alec enjoy an eventful day off together, and Clary spends her day with Jonathan in Paris on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 12, “Original Sin.”

My emotions are everywhere; I’m happy because this episode is full of Malec love and soft moments between the two. But, Simon almost dies in Izzy’s arms, and Jonathan escaped Luke, Jace, and Alec as they rescue Clary.

It’s nice to see Magnus and Alec enjoy a full day where they don’t have any other responsibilities besides being with each other. It’s cute that Magnus doesn’t get Alec’s apparent intentions to keep Magnus in bed for the morning, but I’m glad he didn’t catch on because their training session is steamy and I’m here for it.

I love that we’re actually getting to see more of the two as a couple and doing couple things and living their life together because we hardly ever get tender moments where there’s nothing else going on.

Magnus is lost because before he had all the time in the world to do whatever he wanted, now he can’t wrap his head around only having fifty years left. So, he does what any normal human does when they begin to think their life is wasting away; he starts to check off a semi bucket list.

Magnus doesn’t want to sit around and do nothing because he thinks he’ll miss out on memories, but he quickly realizes after Alec talks to him that he has to slow down and enjoy the moments to remember them. He has to make a connection with the memory and right now he’s not doing that.

I’m just going to say it – we need a spinoff based around Magnus and Alec. Now that Shadowhunters has officially been canceled and won’t be returning for a Season 4 I think that it’s the most logical, and fans would absolutely eat it up. Alec could be reassigned institutes, and the show could be about their lives together there while raising their adopted daughter, Madzie. Now, let’s get someone to put it together!

Izzy and Simon have always had a strange connection towards each other, from friends to maybe more, so it’s not surprising that she accompanies Simon to the sewers. Their friendship towards each other is pure, and Izzy cares deeply for him, even if it is just as friends and nothing more.

It’s heartbreaking that Simon dies in Izzy’s arms, but it hits me in the gut even more that Simon lives because Izzy feeds her arm to him. Izzy’s demons and battles with her addiction to vampire blood have, for the most part, been over and she’s gotten over it, but now she’s going to go back to being a vampire blood craving junky.

I don’t want to see Izzy go back down this road because last time she almost didn’t come out alive. It’s kind of irritating that it’s the last season and this is going to be the storyline that Izzy has to have because I’m tired of having to see her struggle.

It’s brave of Izzy to sacrifice her addiction to save Simon’s life willingly, but it says the same about Simon because as he’s almost lifeless, he’s still refusing to drink her blood. Simon is willing to die for the people that he loves, which is why he shakes his head and tries to resist her arm, but allowing Simon to die on her watch is not something that Izzy is going to do.

I don’t think that the mark of Cain is going to be gone entirely from Simon, I feel like it was a little too easy to track him down and get it all done.

I don’t understand Jonathan’s infatuation with making Clary like him, but he needs to realize that he’s done too much to her and her family for forgiveness to be something given easily.

He wants to be good because of how he was accepted and taken in by the lightwoods, but that’s because they didn’t know what a monster he was. Someone like Jonathan doesn’t deserve forgiveness, and it’ll be the only thing he tries to get until he snaps and goes back to his old ways.

Now that she’s escaped, thanks to Luke, Alec, and Jace, I wonder where Jonathan will travel to. I think that Jonathan will take a risk and go back to New York to try and kidnap Clary again, especially since they’re connected and he knows that he can’t be killed without it killing her as well.
