Chicago Med Review: The Things We Do (Season 4 Episode 12)
Most of the patients this week serve as a backdrop to the tensions and drama between a few of the doctors and patients on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 12, “The Things We Do.”
Connor finding out the truth causes an apparent rift between the pair if his cool reactions to Ava are any indication at the top of the hour. The pair’s latest patient of the week, Barbara, provides a battleground initially somewhat similar to Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 11, “Who Can You Trust,” in terms of agency.
But it’s the emotional aspect that changes the story’s course as we get to see the toll it’s taking on Barbara’s mother and the realities of their dynamic and relationship as she opens up to Ms. Goodwin about the competing guilt about what she asked Connor and Ava to do and the love and respect she has for her daughter.

I appreciate the fact that Chicago Med offers aspects like this when it comes to some of their patients’ of the week and gives me a chance to dig in a bit more.
In the midst of it all, we finally get more information about what happened between Ava and Connor’s dad.
I honestly don’t know how to feel about this story. It’s creepy (the father/son aspect), and messy, and I can’t look away.

With Ava adamantly denied anything Connor’s father said happened, are we supposed to believe it didn’t? There were heavy indicators back on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 1, “Be My Better Half,” that it happened. But, was I wrong to assume that the implication was that Ava slept with Connor’s father?
It’ll be interesting to see where that story goes or if it will fizzle out anytime soon. Or will we be getting more insight into what happened that night and be proven wrong?
Either way, Connor gets his heart broken and loses any trust he had in Ava thanks to the whole situation.

While Connor and Ava may be ending things, I’m still not sure where Ethan and April stand, especially after April spends most of the hour completely avoiding any conversation with Ethan.
Meanwhile, outside of Chicago Gaffney, the medivac crash provides an opportunity for Will and Natalie’s reconciliation. Of course, it’s short-lived as we find out that Will really isn’t ready if that final scene is any indication.
How long will the lie about the gun go on? What are the odds that it’s the set up for something potentially tragic or explosive in the Manstead household?

Elsa, the med student, gets her first real taste of the realities of losing a patient, and she visibly struggles with what happens. It adds another layer to the med student that we haven’t seen from her before, and paints a clearer picture of who she is beyond the med school archetype/foil that she initially was at the start of the season.
I’m always for seeing more of humanity in the medical field, and her story this week does the job well. I would love to see more of it.

- Is it just me or is there some very subtle set up happening with Dr. Charles, Ms. Goodwin, and that online dating story?
- Is Ava telling the truth?
