40 TV Characters Who Died in 2018 (continued):
21. Madison Clark, Fear the Walking Dead
In what was quite the badass ending, Madison sacrificed herself to save everyone so her kids, Nick and Alicia, could escape, after leading hundreds of the Infected inside the stadium and setting it ablaze.
This was a shocking end, given that Madison had been one of the series’ main characters (along with the rest of her family) from the very beginning. Her portrayer, Kim Dickens, also didn’t see her end coming. She was reportedly “heartbroken” and “devastated” when producers told her that Madison was being killed off in the show’s fourth season.
22. Nick Clark, Fear the Walking Dead
Fear the Walking Dead wasn’t pulling any punches when it came to major character deaths in the fourth season. Madison’s son Nick was also killed off, shot point blank in the chest by Charlie, a little girl who had infiltrated the Diamond as a mole working for the Vultures. Despite his group’s attempts to revive him, Nick died with his sister looking on.
Seriously, how much more can poor Alicia take?!
23. Gabriel, Supernatural
Gabriel the archangel has been a staple that comes in and out of the show throughout the entire run of Supernatural. At first, he posed as Loki. But once his real identity was revealed, fans became even more excited about his presence.
During his time with the Winchesters, Gabriel was always reluctant to help them out with any battles between his father and brothers. However, once the Winchesters saved him from the torture chamber of Hell, he realized he couldn’t stand idly by.
Gabriel helped them to travel through a rift to another world, a world where Michael has taken over. In a moment of great need, he sacrificed himself to Michael in order to save the Winchesters and their ragtag army of hunters.
The archangel has died before, but his death this time definitely seems more final — something that’s incredibly disheartening to all his many fans.
24. Charlotte Richards, Lucifer
Charlotte Richards death was one of the saddest moments of 2018.
Charlotte avoided death once before, so of course, she couldn’t avoid it a second time. But while the original Charlotte died alone in a hotel room after being murdered, Post-Hell Charlotte willingly sacrificed her life for Amenadiel. DB Woodside and Tricia Helfer brought their A-game to the scenes.
The death scene itself was set in one of the most beautiful places in Los Angeles. Charlotte and Amenadiel have a lovely conversation about heaven and their actions, shortly before cowardly Pierce shows up and tries to murder Amenadiel. Charlotte jumped in front of the gun and then died in Amenadiel’s arms, with the camera focusing on the waffle bracelet Dan had just gifted the woman he loved.
Amenadiel’s wings came back and he took Charlotte’s body up to heaven with him, in a scene as stunning as it was heartbreaking. Charlotte’s death was the driving force of the Season 3 finale and we know our team is still going to be reeling from it in Season 4.
Charlotte’s death brings her redemption and its a beautiful full circle to her wonderful storyline.
25. Al Olinsky, Chicago P.D.
This was a death that would bring anyone to tears. After being charged with murdering the man who killed Voight’s son on Chicago P.D., Al Olinsky went to prison — essentially in place of Hank — only to be stabbed several times soon after.
Al died during surgery, and to say his death has had a profound effect on the rest of the team, particularly Hank Voight, would be an understatement. The whole thing was truly heartbreaking.
26. Jerome Valeska, Gotham
All Gotham fans knew who Jerome was supposed to be — or at least we thought we did. For that reason, his sudden death was a tad shocking and more than slightly poetic.
The strangest part of the whole ordeal was the special present he left for his brother Jeremiah. This last gift between the rival siblings left a very large impact on the surviving brother’s life, and it wasn’t much to laugh at.
All the chaos has turned the entire city into ruins, leaving James Gordon and Bruce Wayne to pick up the pieces. It may take the rest of the final season to clean up where this sinister duo left off.
27. Xavier Dolls, Wynonna Earp
Xavier Dolls, beloved member of the Earp revenant fighting team and Black Badge Division agent, died on Wynonna Earp Season 3 Episode 3, “Colder Weather.” As one of the smooth-talking, handsome love interests of our titular hero, Dolls was one of the best fighting chances the team had, but he ended up sacrificing himself for the team in one of the year’s most shocking twists.
The team discovered that Dolls was actually a genetically modified human — part dragon, really! — but didn’t realize how bad of a condition he was in.
Jeremy had been helping to give him special serum to make sure his health was in order, but he wasn’t faring well and knew he was dying. In his last heroic action, he saved the team from one of Bulshar’s minions, getting killed in the process.
Rest in peace, Dolls.
28. Benny Severide, Chicago Fire
Kelly Severide’s father died suddenly this season on Chicago Fire. Kelly and Benny’s relationship was always complicated, and his death proved that even more.
Watching Kelly deal with his father’s death, and to learn that his dad had pulled through for him with a favor just before he died, made for one of the most emotionally powerful episodes of the show in a long time. And thanks to an incredible firehouse family, Benny received the funeral he truly deserved.
29. Rip Hunter, Legends of Tomorrow
Rip Hunter was the man in charge of bringing the legends together. His relationship with Sara was the shining spot of Season 1; it was a relationship that got deeper in Season 2. We saw a Rip who truly loved his team but didn’t know how to express it. How even without his memories he held the legends, Sara especially, in high regard.
Viewers don’t know exactly what happened behind the scenes or if Arthur Darvill just wanted to focus on his music. But by Season 3, things had changed, and sadly the character of Rip Hunter was done a disservice.
Legends of Tomorrow has never truly followed any set logic, but they way they handled Rip was particularly terrible. He was a wonderful character that deserved more than to be written out of character and then killed off.
Rip died saving the Legends, his found family, so at least there was a bit of comfort in that. But his death still stings and he will be sorely missed.
