26 Fantastic Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Horror TV Shows from 2018
26 Fantastic Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Horror Shows from 2018 (continued):
21. The Expanse

The Expanse is character driven science fiction at it’s best. The show’s third season found Earth, Mars, and the Belt in the midst of an all-out war, with each part of the former alliance vying for control of the solar system.
Season 3 brought together plots and character arcs that had been set up throughout the first two seasons and united it all in a story that is as compelling as it is entertaining. Syfy canceled the series earlier this year, but it was almost immediately picked up by Amazon within the same month.
The Expanse excels in storytelling with a passionate narrative that keeps fans invested in every minute. From the beautiful cinematography to the incredibly topical and entertaining story The Expanse is telling, we are dying for more of this sci-fi epic.
22. Black Lightning

The CW’s most underrated superhero show may also be its best contribution to the DC Universe. Black Lightning has been impressive since the first moment it aired, and that momentum has continued right into Season 2.
The show confronts complicated issues surrounding race, sexuality, family, and community violence with a deft hand and an impressive grace. Jefferson Pierce takes up the mantle of doing what’s right for his community and his family and is one of the most compelling superheroes on television right now.
Black Lightning also provides incredible representation for young LGBTQ+ people with Anissa Pierce/Thunder, a badass lesbian superhero, following in her father’s footsteps and fighting crime at his side.
23. Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery faced a lot of justified criticism early on after killing off Captain Philippa Georgiou as well as Medical Officer (and openly queer character) Hugh Culber. But with the beauty of science fiction and Star Trek in particular, dead doesn’t always mean dead and both of these characters have returned since their early and ill-fated deaths.
Set 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery is exploring new territory and taking the series in a grittier direction than its predecessors while still maintaining the heart that drives sci-fi fans to keep coming back to the Trek Universe.
We’re looking forward to seeing where the latest installment will boldly go in 2019.
24. Runaways

Christmas came a few days early as Runaways Season 2 was released in its entirety on Hulu just in time to make it onto this list! The hit Marvel series is driven by a group of teenagers with superhuman abilities as they team up to take on The Pride, which just happens to be made up of their criminal parents.
Runaways stays true to the comics it’s based on while also improving upon the original work with every step, making the characters more compelling and more balanced as the show goes on. A strong combination of good, earnest fun, heartwarming found families, and everything that comes with a coming of age story, Runaways is a can’t miss for any superhero fan.
25. The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead hasn’t always been perfect, but Season 9 is working hard to win back viewers who became fatigued over the last few years.
Successfully executing a time jump following the death of Negan’s rule, Season 9 finds long-beloved characters working on their relationships with each other, slaying zombies, navigating alliances, and fighting to maintain what’s left of their humanity.
2018 marks the exit of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, but he leaves behind a solid ensemble of arguably even more compelling characters. Season 9 also introduced a haunting new group called The Whisperers, bringing a fresh and horrifying twist to the zombie-apocalypse show.
26. Doctor Who

The Doctor regenerated this year and Thirteen came to us like a breath of fresh air.
Along with the new Doctor, Doctor Who was under new creative control this year with Chris Chibnall stepping up after the departure of Steven Moffat. Additionally, the show brought in a whole new writers room, leading to a new and exciting set of adventures.
Along with Thirteen came three new delightful companions in Graham, Ryan, and Yasmin, each bringing something different to the table with charm and heart. Most episodes of Doctor Who Season 11 work as stand-alone pieces as team TARDIS travels across space and time righting wrongs and exploring the universe.
Doctor Who combines an open and honest view of social justice and humanity while also providing a captivating and heartwarming story filled with adventure and fun. We can’t wait to see where Thirteen will take us next.
