Chicago Med Review: Play By My Rules (Season 4 Episode 8)

Chicago Med, Reviews

Some hard lessons are learned (or ignored) to varying degrees of success on Chicago Med Season 4 Episode 8, “Play By My Rules,” in another solid hour that leaves a few of the doctors, nurses, and staff in some interesting personal places.

Will’s guilt and stress about Ray’s situation hits a fever pitch and transfers itself to a patient that comes into the ED with his daughter. It’s understandable where he’s coming from when it comes to dealing with how he decides to practice and save his patients. But it feels like he’s heavily overcompensating for the rules the FBI have set for him when it comes to Ray.

What’s a bit interesting (and just slightly confusing) is that as the season has continued, the source of the guilt builds from different directions — from the fact that he took the kickback earlier in the season to his constant lying to Natalie about what’s going on. It manifests into some hypocritical comments.

It’s what validates Agent Lee’s comment about his stance on Ray’s treatment.

Agent Ingrid Lee: You made this mess when you took Ray’s kickback. This one’s on you.

Will doesn’t help things when he decides to lash out at Natalie for not trusting him and betraying his trust when he has his own hidden secret.

There’s a moment where it looks like he’ll come clean, only to have Natalie be the one to apologize. But with the wedding approaching, how smoothly will things go with this secret between them and the danger that Will’s bound to face?

Meanwhile, Connor doesn’t take the news from Ms. Goodwin that he’ll have to share his hybrid OR with Dr. Lanik so well. I mean, given that he has to share with the man who hasn’t done himself any favors since his first appearance in the ED, it’s easy to get why he would be upset.

But it gets to the point that he underhandedly takes his ED patient in for what turns out to be a massive surgery, all because Lanik has another surgery scheduled.

It doesn’t necessarily paint him in the best light, even with his justification for staying in the ED and heading into the hybrid OR.

Random Thoughts:

  • The grossest visuals this week are provided by Dr. Choi’s patient, Keegan, who manages to scratch right through the muscle and down to her skull after dealing with a three-year itch. Seriously, I have to turn away anytime the wound is shown.
  • Connor continues to give me some serious ER Dr. Ross vibes.
  • Maggie doing the whole passive-aggressive thing when it comes to April taking over while she’s in surgery is more than a little frustrating. But ultimately, it is understandable. It’s just unfortunate that April can relate to her reasoning in an entirely different aspect of her life.
  • So… Connor and Ava are definitely together if that scrub room scene is any indication.
