Black Lightning Review: The Book of Blood: Chapter 3: The Sange (Season 2 Episode 7)
Black Lightning Season 2 Episode 7, “The Book of Blood: Chapter 3: The Sange,” finally brings the show back to its roots. With almost half of the season under its belt, superhero action takes the center stage.
For the first six episodes of this season, most of the high-octane action sequences have been contained to the beginning and end of the episode. They flip the script this time around, and focus a majority of the 45 minutes on Black Lightning taking on the Sange. This isn’t to say that there is no time for the family dynamic though — plenty of dramatic tidbits still sneak their way in.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, I must apologize. Last week, I jumped to the conclusion that the Looker and the Sange were going to be the new direction this season was going to take.
With what unfolds this episode, it seems that is far from the truth. In fact, it seems like this whole story arc may be put to bed.
Sure, there are some loose ends hanging around that will come in to play eventually, but who is to say if that will even happen this season.
Since her first appearance, the Looker came off as a formidable foe. Unfortunately, she proves to be the exact opposite when she is taken out of the picture so quickly.
As Black Lightning takes the femme fatale on head to head, it is clear he is outnumbered and outpowered. Once he is overtaken, the Looker makes the same mistake that I did by making assumptions.
What a sloppy villain! I’m guessing she is hoping to come off a bit poetic in her execution, but she clearly doesn’t calculate the risk. A person who has powers that deal with electricity, more than likely has something up their sleeve to counteract the charge it gives.
This really makes me wonder how she could have possibly taken over so many people in the first place. As we all know, a team is only as strong as its leader, so maybe that explains why the Sange haven’t taken over the world yet.

With the Lookers demise, it isn’t clear what the writers were going for here exactly. Was this villain only here to introduce a new species into the show? Is she really even dead?
Black Lightning rarely dives into villain of the week territory, so currently it is hard to say. I’m just asking that this arc makes some sort of impact down the line.
I’m personally hoping that “the element” makes its way into someone Jefferson cares about, or better yet maybe it will fall into Tobias’ greedy hands. Now that no one is in control of the silver goop, the whole thing is up in the air. Lets just hope it doesn’t die here.
Jefferson Pierce: I will pay you to stop.

More exciting than the Sange showdown, is Jennifer and Khalil’s ever-changing relationship.
Jennifer’s maturity continues to grow, as she gives Khalil respectable advice — that could have come from her father’s lips. When paired with her actions to protect her man, this really shows character growth and development.
It is also good to see that she isn’t 100% changed. When she rides off into the sunset, after a passionate kiss with Khalil, it is safe to say she is still the Jennifer we know and love. You never know which road the CW will take with character development, but it seems like everything is working out “realistically” so far.

I wonder how long it will take Khalil to piece together that Black Lightning is Jennifer’s father. Hopefully, it won’t take as long as it did for him to realize that Tobias is the reason he became paralyzed. It seems possible at this point, that Jennifer may end up spilling the beans on this — just like she did with her powers.
The exciting revelations between these two, give the episode a lot of heart. No eye-rolling here. Just pure, unadulterated enjoyment.
Okay, none might be a stretch, but it is easily overlooked when you are caught up in the moment.
I assume that Tobias will eventually catch up with Jennifer and Khalil, in some seedy motel at the edge of town. One of them will be stepping out to get food and supplies, keeping them away from each other at a crucial moment. But here I go making assumptions again — I guess I’ll never learn.
