Supernatural Review: The Scar (Season 14 Episode 3)
Though the departure from the norm in the last few episodes is enjoyable, Supernatural bringing Dean back to normal is clearly what’s best for the show.
Supernatural Season 14 Episode 3, “The Scar,” reminds us just how sorely Dean has been missed by immediately making us laugh, feel things, and watch Dean split some wigs.
“The Scar” serves several purposes. First, it serves to intertwine stories from the ultimately failed Wayward Sisters spin-off into the flagship show. Honestly, it looks to be an excellent move.

By taking Kaia’s doppelgänger and giving her weapon the ability to hurt Michael, it creates a strong connection between the two stories.
Second, it brings Dean back into the fold. This is more of an inevitability than anything, but I hadn’t realized how much I missed Dean until he started making cracks about Sam’s beard. Welcome back, DW.

Finally, “The Scar” helps Jack find his place in the world without his powers. His identity struggle has become apparent over the last few episodes, but his aptitude as a hunter comes out when the pressure was on.

Alexander Calvert’s layered performance as Jack makes his story feel richer. There’s a lot to unpack on this episode, but Jack’s journey gives “The Scar” an emotional backbeat.
Still, the most exciting part of “The Scar” is that it begins to resolve the stories that originally set Wayward Sisters in motion. Though my heart continues to weep that we never saw this series come to fruition on its own, it helps to see Jody Mills again and bring alterna-Kaia back into the fold.
The wayward thread (see what I did there?) intertwines with the Michael story nearly seamlessly, and it creates deeper, more interesting questions. For instance, what is Michael’s endgame? Why is he powering up monsters?

Still, what’s most important about “The Scar,” is that it brings Dean back to us to stay. Sure, he’s got a little more emotional damage (who doesn’t on this show?) but he’s the same wise-cracking, wig-splitting Dean Winchester that fans know and love. Really, Dean is the backbone of the show.
I will never get over the moment when Dean reunites with Jack and Castiel. It’s a powerful scene in which few words were needed, just some masculine hugs.

A few stray thoughts:
- Misha Collins and Alexander Calvert did some of their best work on the show this time around.
- I have a theory that alterna-Kaia will be back and maybe even stay in the bunker for safe keeping.
- What I don’t have a theory on is exactly what Michael is planning. Anyone else want to float a guess?
- I’m still sore about missing out on Wayward Sisters, but this is the closest I’ve come to forgiving them. I desperately want to see those stories resolved.
- Another theory: Dean and Nick will forge some kind of strange bond due to an archangel related PTSD.
I enjoy a good serialized story as much as the next guy, but I’m itching to get back into a weekly hunt.
