Charmed Review: Let This Mother Out (Season 1 Episode 2)
On Charmed Season 1 Episode 2 “Let This Mother Out,” the three sisters navigate the use of their new powers, while also navigating their newfound relationship.
After the Charmed season premiere, I was pretty hopeful about this show. Now, I’m not so sure.

I want to give it a chance because the three main actresses work well together so far, and because I trust the voice and vision of Jennie Snyder Urman, but there’s a lot of predictability in this episode that feels trite and consists of the kind of corny, goofy, supernatural shenanigans that I’m not a big fan of.
This episode centers on the return of Marisol, who Mel and Maggie summon from the dead. But of course, as we all have guessed from the moment she appears, it’s not actually her.
She turns out to be an imposter demon, a completely foreseeable turn of events.

As it were, Harry, who the sisters were warned not to trust by Marisol, is actually on their side. Much of this episode is spent on the sisters trying to suss him out until they realize in a big confrontation that he’s there to help them, which they accept begrudgingly.
Meanwhile, Maggie settles into her power to read people’s minds and emotions, which she starts to get a better handle on by the end of the episode.
Between choosing to end things definitively with her ex-boyfriend, and being the one to sense that Marisol is an imposter demon, she’s starting to come to her own, and trust her instincts.
Mel and Macy, who butt heads a lot, are also learning to get along. The sister dynamics are mildly intriguing at best, though sweet Maggie makes up for it. She’s the most interesting one.

“Let This Mother Out” also has a lot of forced humor and includes the type of shenanigans you’d expect with new witches trying to get their powers in order. It’s all played for laughs but doesn’t quick click. Though, the girls referring to Harry as Meghan Markle is kind of funny.
As the mystery behind their mother’s death continues to unfold and be the main focus of the story, the sisters have a lot of emotional baggage to deal with. Mel, Maggie, and Macy are still mourning their loss, and for Macy, it’s a little more complicated, as she has to confront her abandonment issues.
Overall, “Let This Mother Out” is full of clichés and predictability and has little to keep one’s interest. The show is still trying to find its footing, and that’s totally fine. It’s only the second episode.
But as the apocalypse looms, let’s hope the show picks up some steam and delivers us good TV.
