At San Diego Comic-Con, we spoke with The Magicians star Jason Ralph about Quentin’s relationship with Eliot, what to expect from his new persona, and what it was like to tackle the role of The Beast in last season’s alternate-timeline episode.

During the roundtable interview, Ralph revealed that his new persona, who we were briefly introduced to in the closing moments of The Magicians Season 3 Finale, couldn’t be more different from Quentin.

“I play this character named Brian, who I refer to as ‘Bri-guy,'” Ralph said. “He has a shinier disposition than Quentin does. He also spends about 75% of his time on-screen covered in blood.”

In the closing scene of the finale, Eliot (possessed by the Monster) approached “Brian,” who obviously had no idea who he was (or that he was possessed). Ralph didn’t let on whether or not Quentin’s “true” personality will ever reemerge, but if it does, Quentin will likely be determined to help save Eliot.

“I would imagine, if these characters ever reemerged — if Quentin emerges from the body of Brian — that there would be a strong desire to try and get his friend back from the clutches of this thing and whatever that means, whatever that journey is, whether that means defeating it or helping it or transforming it,” he said.

Of course, the relationship between Quentin and Eliot (Queliot) is a complicated one — and also a fan-favorite, given the extremely positive reaction to The Magicians Season 3 Episode 5, “A Life in the Day.” Ralph even went as far as to call the two “soulmates.”

“I think [Quentin and Eliot] are very similar people who chose different ways of expressing themselves. As much as you can believe in soulmates, I think they probably are,” Ralph said.

“They never really seem to stop learning from each other, and I think that’s important with any relationship that is long-lasting. They push each other in unexpected ways. It’s a lifetime love, I think.”
