Shadowhunters Review: A Heart of Darkness (Season 3 Episode 8)
Alec and Izzy must work with Magnus to bring Jace back from Lilith’s control, but her hold isn’t going down without a fight. Meanwhile, Clary is interrogated by The Clave on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 8, “A Heart of Darkness.”
Jace’s life has been in a constant state of trouble for some time now, and I just want it to end. It will be a miracle if Jace can come back from this and still remotely be the same man he was before Lilith took control of him.
We’ve seen Jace tortured and beaten, but this is a low that he’s never gotten to. Jace begs and begs and begs for Alec and Izzy to kill him, to not allow him to be captured by Lilith again because he can’t take doing all of those horrible things. And then Lilith swoops in and takes him like it’s nothing.

Alec and Izzy, no matter how much they couldn’t do anything, break their promise to Jace, and it’s going to affect the way Alec acts. He’s dumbfounded and defeated that Lilith swiped Jace in an instant after everything they did to get him free of her control.
I feel like Alec is going to take it the worst. It’s not like before where they had no idea what was going on with Jace, and all they could do was imagine it. Now, it’s real. Jace has shown them how broken inside he is and they know what is playing in his head, and that’s going to haunt them.
My heart sinks and the waterworks begin to flow as Jace is begging Alec and Izzy to kill him. He’s tried to do the act multiple himself, but Lilith’s powers won’t allow him to hurt himself. It’s so alarming and troubling because Jace is so adamant about how he’s tried so many times to get rid of himself and how he can’t do it.

Well, what if Jace does get saved and he still has the same mentality? Especially now that he’s been re-captured after Izzy and Alec promise to him that he’ll be safe from now on, he’ll believe that he isn’t genuinely safe from Lilith anywhere. Either way, I don’t see this ending well for Jace. Not in the slightest.
I don’t understand what Clary thought when she decided to send Jace and the others home while she stayed behind to take the blame. She could have quickly made a portal as well to leave, but she wants to be some kind of hero instead because she secretly blames herself for everything. Turning herself in, in her eyes, is the highest thing she could do.
Well, she should have been able to think about how The Clave can make you talk and tell the truth about anything, which is why all the tea is spilled. Now, The Clave knows everything there is to know about what’s been happening recently.

Clary may be sentenced to death, but she won’t be dying anytime soon. She released valuable information about Lilith’s rise and how she’s working so now that the word is out they’ll be working on the way to defeat Lilith and end up needing Clary’s help, I assume.
I don’t like the love triangle drama between Jordan, Simon, and Maia. The love triangle storyline is played out and overused. I don’t feel like it’s in character for Maia to still have feelings for Jordan, no matter how much he’s changed. How could she still have feelings for someone who left her for dead and turned her life upside down?
I just don’t see it being plausible, especially with how fantastic things have been going with Simon and Maia. But, this looks like it could be the beginning of the end for Mimon. Mamon? Saia? Whatever the heck their ship name is I don’t want it to end. I’ve waited too long for this relationship to happen.

I love Maia with all of my heart, but it’s a shitty move to plan on leaving without saying anything to Simon. It doesn’t matter if you need a break from what’s going on, you can’t call someone or let them know that you’re leaving for a bit? Disrespectful and rude.
I’m so happy that we have some more information on why the Seelie Queen branded Simon with the mark. I never would’ve imagined that the Seelie Queen protects Daylighters with how she’s been treating Simon.
Now that I know the Seelie Queen and Lilith have some long-standing beef I want to see them fight it out. The Seelie Queen looks a little frightened of Lilith when she begins to move on her, but there’s no way the Seelie Queen wouldn’t put up a heck of a fight.
With only two episodes left in the season, things could take any turn, and I’m not sure that I’m ready.
Other Thoughts:
- Alec, Izzy, and Jace’s relationship never fails to get me in my feelings.
- I hate that Maryse, someone who could probably help figure things out, is kept in the dark about what’s happening to Jace.
- Simon is the only thing that can banish Lilith, which means he’s the game-changing piece on the chessboard.
