Suits Season Finale Review: Tiny Violin / Good-Bye (Season 7 Episodes 15 and 16)

Reviews, Suits

As Mike and Rachel get the happy ending they deserve, Jessica Pearson is about to have a new beginning.

On Suits Season 7 Episode 15, “Tiny Violin,” and Suits Season 7 Episode 16, “Good-Bye,” the firm is once again in trouble, and big changes are coming.

Each storyline works well, and we even get the chance to see some familiar faces return. Turns out, the letter Louis drafted throwing Jessica under the bus has opened up a whole new can of worms with the former partners, who are now trying to take over the firm altogether.

It’s a nice way to bring in, just for a few moments, past characters like Scottie and Jack Soloff, and it also sets up a good reason for us to continue to see Robert Zane despite the fact that his daughter is about to move across the country.

It couldn’t be more fitting that it’s Mike who comes up with a way to save the firm. It’s one last impression he’ll make, and it’s poetic considering that the firm nearly went under because of him in the first place.

He even does this in the absence of Harvey, his mentor, which feels like a testament to how much he’s learned from him. That’s been their dynamic all season, which has subtly prepared us for Mike’s exit.

At the same time, it’s unfortunate that Mike’s last episode is one not spent working with Harvey. The two of them have had a lot of “last hoorahs” so to speak this season as well, but Mike and Harvey working cases together is something we’re going to miss moving forward.

Mike, instead, is focused on the kind of case he was meant to do. It’s a class action lawsuit against a company whose practices resulted in lead poisoning for several children. This kind of case allows Mike to fight the good fight, to work with the clinic again, and to get a job offer that almost feels too good to be true.

It isn’t.

And this is the perfect ending (and new beginning) for Mike and Rachel. They’re both leaving corporate law behind to move to Seattle and run a firm that focuses entirely on cases that are about helping people.

If only all of this didn’t feel so rushed.

I’d have liked to see more focus on Mike and Rachel sitting with this idea, but more importantly, I’d have liked to see more involved with their goodbyes — and with the wedding.

Instead, the episode in which we say goodbye to these characters is also the backdoor pilot for the Suits spinoff that will follow Jessica Pearson, and it’s too much to accomplish in even this extended finale episode.

Don’t get me wrong, the Jessica stuff is great, I love that Harvey goes to Chicago to work with her, and I can’t freaking wait to see the new series and have Gina Torres on my screen regularly again.

But I can’t help but begrudge that story a little since what I really wanted was more time to bid farewell to Mike and Rachel.

The wedding is nice (and seriously, how appropriate is it that it’s Donna that pulls the whole thing together?), Mike and Rachel are adorable, and their vows are beautiful. But it feels like a blur.

Mike and Harvey’s goodbye is among my favorite moments, though. Forget the manly handshakes. Their goodbye is a real, genuine hug, and you can tell that Harvey is as proud as he is heartbroken to see his friend go.

And we end with celebration, which feels right. The firm is saved (for now) even though I suspect Harvey is going to have some feelings about not having his name first on the wall anymore, and Mike and Rachel are finally married and getting ready to ride off into the sunset together to start a new life.

There’s also resolution for Louis, who is attending the wedding happily with Sheila. And for Harvey and Donna, who have made amends and look pretty cute dancing together (I’m just saying — and you caught Scottie’s comment about Donna, right?).

All of this does feel satisfying, and the change that’s coming with the firm already has me intrigued to see the next season.

Plus, I’m very, very interested to see how Harvey will cope with losing Mike.

What did you think of the Season 7 Finale of Suits? Are you said to see Mike and Rachel go? Are you excited to see Katherine Heigl joint the cast next season?

  • I love Katherine Heigl so I’m looking forward to the next season. I follow her blog and find her to be a caring and loving wife and mother. She adores her adopted girls and the new baby just makes their home more interesting. I love Suits as well, and hate to see Mike and Rachel go. I still don’t understand why Patrick Adams is leaving. I’m sure they could have written a new story line to explain Rachel leaving. Oh well . . . .
