Siren Review: Showdown (Season 1 Episode 6)
Donna and Ryn come to a disagreement that could ruin their relationship together as a whole and Xander gets his answers on Siren Season 1 Episode 6, “Showdown.”
It’s evident that Donna and Ryn are not going to see eye to eye when it comes to humans anytime soon. But, Donna is only hurting herself by continuing to ignore Ryn’s request to show her that Ben and Maddie are not the same as the people who hurt her.
Ryn is trying to save everyone, not just herself and Donna. Mermaids are supposed to be highly intelligent creatures, yet she can’t see that if she and Ryn both go back home, they’ll eventually starve to death.

With Decker on the loose it’s possible that he could be the one to grab Donna again, so she’s making a stupid choice leaving Ryn in the street and jumping into the water.
Now, the navy is going to be working their hardest to track her down, and there’s a possibility that she could lead them back to the rest of them.
The only thing I would change about the outcome of the fight between Ryn, Donna, and Decker is Ben getting involved. He takes away Ryn’s chance of getting rid of one of their main threats to survival.

Ben knows how much loyalty means and by saving Decker’s life and not letting Ryn take him out it looks like he’s taking his side.
Now that Xander’s suspicions about mermaids have been proven correct it’s only a matter of time before we see a possible fallout between Ben and Xander. Xander has been looking for answers for months and Ben has had them, but kept them to himself.
Xander is a level-headed individual, so I think that he and Ben have the strength in their friendship to stay cool with each other. At the same time, though, no matter how much Ben is trying to keep Ryn safe he let Xander think that he knew nothing and betrayed him.

I have theories about Helen Hawkins and why she’s on land, but my main question about her is why she is so adamant to get Ryn back in the water. She knows that their food is being taken away and without it, they’ll starve to death. Why would Helen want them to go back to that life?
Helen could just be trying to protect herself from the feds, but there’s no way they’d ever think that she was a mermaid. The navy just figured out that mermaids could walk on land, they’d never believe that an old woman was a mermaid in disguise.
There are so many possibilities to why Helen has stayed on land and how long she’s been here, but I think that she’s probably known back home. I feel like there’s something more significant that she’s not telling all of them. Well, Donna since she’s the one who knows about it.

That brings me to another point, why hasn’t she told Ryn that she’s also a mermaid? It’s far off, but could she be related to her?
It’s interesting that the siren song is like a drug, you craving it and not being able to think about anything else. I guess that means that once a mermaid has gotten close enough to hit someone with their song even if they get away, they have a permanent catch no matter what.
Siren continues to amaze week after week. It’s shocking that we’re already halfway through the season.
Other Thoughts:
- I wonder if Ryn is actually attracted to Ben and Maddie or if she’s just mimicking the affection they give to each other.
- Ryn being caught by Deputy Staub is terrible news for everyone involved.
- One of the only things I don’t want to come from Ryn involving herself with Ben and Maddie is a love triangle. Love triangles are exhausting and overplayed.
- Jerry noticed that Decker is out of place. He can tell there’s something up with him snooping around.
