Timeless – Season 2 Timeless Roundtable: You Made Us Love You

Timeless Roundtable: You Made Us Love You

Roundtables, Timeless

The Time Team traveled to Tinsel Town on Timeless Season 2 Episode 3, “Hollywoodland” for a romantic and glamours adventure.

The Lyatt ship sailed while the Riya ship smoldered, and Flynn busted out of the joint and bunked with the Time Team.

True, Jessica clockblocked Lyatt with an untimely, back-from-the-dead text.

But, I guess we always knew it, you really made us do it. You made us love you, Timeless, so we love the episode despite Lyatt sailing away at the end of “Hollywoodland.”

Tell-Tale TV writers Allison Nichols, Janelle McCammack, and Ashley Bissette Sumerel discuss the episode below.

What were you surprised to learn about the Hollywood of yesteryear?

Allison: I never knew that they literally pieced together film. That was a super interesting tidbit. Also, the job sounds beyond tedious. Can you imagine if you messed up??

Janelle: I was surprised to learn about the code names for everything! No wonder Citizen Kane’s “Rosebud” struck such a chord.

I was also surprised to see the amazing cab that’s doors opened from the middle, like french doors. So glamorous!

Ashley: I actually spent some time studying film years ago, so I knew a decent amount, but there’s still so much to learn! And I loved seeing it all portrayed on the show.

Lyatt is officially canon. What was your favorite Lyatt moment on the episode?

Allison: Oh goodness, how do you choose? It’s a tough choice. I am going to have to pick the song. It made my heart swoon. As much as I love the moment to when a couple finally gets together, the game-changer moments before then own my heart. The song is one of them for Lyatt.

Abigail Spencer absolutely crushes it. The song choice is perfection, and Wyatt and Lucy making eye contact during it? Swoon.

Janelle: The song is perfection and I love watching eyes flit from lips to eyes to lips to eyes before a kiss.

My favorite Lyatt moment, though, is right after Rufus awkwardly interrupts the morning after cuddles. Rufus shuts the door, and Wyatt immediately shifts his body so he’s more-or-less on top of Lucy and moves in to kiss her.

It’s a confirmation that he doesn’t have second thoughts or doubts about being with Lucy. It’s basically a DTR (define the relationship) gesture, and I love it!

Ashley: Oh man, I loved the song too — that was just, wow. But I think I’m going with the moment by the pool on this one. It’s this sweet realization that they’re both on the same page. It’s cute and it feels natural.

Do you think it was the right call to bust Flynn out of prison and let him bunk with everyone in the bunker? Who would make the best bunk-mate for Flynn?

Allison: Yes. It was definitely the right call. There was no way to get him out legally, and the Time Team needs his help. He has been a huge help so far. There’s no doubt that the team needs him.

I’m so excited to see Flynn in the bunker with everyone. There’s going to be some tension! I feel like Connor Mason is the only bunkmate option. Rufus and Wyatt wouldn’t be able to sleep in the same room as Flynn.

They wouldn’t trust him not to do something shady and devious while everyone else was asleep, and if Flynn fell asleep, they might decide to get a bit of revenge.

Janelle: I think it was a risky call, but the right one. Flynn has never been all villain.

As a fan, I loved that Flynn has joined the Time Team. I hope he continues to bring the snark and philosopher heart to the group.

Even though there would be some conflicts of interest, I would love to see Lucy bunk with Flynn. There has always been a deep connection and frankness in their relationship.

I also would not hate seeing how the two can have fun while they drown their sorrows together. Their on-screen chemistry is fantastic!

Ashley: I agree — risky, but the right thing to do, and I think it’s going to make for such an interesting dynamic for the rest of the Time Team.

As for a bunkmate, Connor Mason makes sense to me, but Wyatt or Rufus would be super interesting.

What do you think about Jiya’s backstory?

Allison: It absolutely broke my heart. If I was Jiya, I wouldn’t want a doctor examining me either. I’m glad we are spending more time on Jiya. She’s one of my favorite characters, and she’s starting to get fleshed out a bit more.

I am curious as to how she is completely healthy now. I mean the seizures don’t seem like the healthiest thing to have.

Janelle: This episode was a huge turning point for Jiya. Not just because she has been given a clean bill of health and a mysterious super-power, but because we actually learned about who she is.

I have always liked Jiya and the representation she provides, but now I relate to her too.

Jiya’s experience with her dad gave her a deep-seated fear of getting a bad diagnosis. But her ignorance was not bliss for the people who love her.

I really enjoyed getting to see those bunker relationships grow and I am really looking forward to crystal-eye-ball Jiya in full effect. Maybe Jiya will even get a last name now!

Ashley: I was really happy to focus on her a bit and learn more about what she’s been through. And yeah, the whole thing is really heartbreaking. I’m interested to see where it goes next.

What is your favorite Rufus moment from the episode?

Allison: His recitation of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song, OBVIOUSLY!

It’s a flawless delivery, and I love that it was the first thing that came to mind. It made me fall in love with Rufus even more.

Janelle: This is a very tough choice. I loved the humor and nerding-out on the episode, but my favorite moment was the Riya conversation.

It became clear that Jiya wasn’t hiding the visions from everyone– just everyone but Rufus. It was also clear that Rufus and Jiya had argued about how to handle her visions.

Working through conflict makes a ship more real. Riya being better developed and having smoldering screen time is what I signed up for.

I also love that we can assume there is communication and, ah, other bunker activity that we aren’t privy to between Riya.

And then when Rufus gives Jiya that look that says I hear you, I’m dunzo.

Ashley: I mean, look, I hate to be predictable and choose something someone else has said, but The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song moment was so fun and so smart! I can’t not choose that moment.

Rufus gives Hedy Lamarr a tip that changes her entire financial future. Was Rufus right to do this?

Allison: I’m honestly not sure. He definitely changed history, which is the same thing that Rittenhouse is doing. Rittenhouse is doing it to shape the world, while Rufus did it to help Hedy out. It’s a nice gesture with no secret agenda to it, but it’s still changing history.

No one seemed upset that he did this either. I think Rufus and maybe Wyatt and Lucy need to have someone remind them that they are there to make sure history stays intact, not to change it themselves.

Janelle: I completely agree with Allison. The Time Team seem so wrapped-up in their amazement and admiration for people in the past, that they are playing fast and loose with their power to alter everything.

What if somehow Rufus’s tip to Hedy butterfly-effected and caused Jessica’s return?

On the other hand, I adore the ways Rufus connects with underrepresented people in the past. There is something so genuine about his desire to understand who they are and how they are finding justice and joy in the societies they live in.

I don’t want that to change!

Ashley: I understand why he did it, and I liked that moment, but I also think it’s problematic and no, he wasn’t right to do it. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel good that he did, but I agree that there’s an element of recklessness with how they all affect history now…
