The Mick Review: The Accident (Season 2 Episode 16)

Reviews, The Mick

On The Mick Season 2 Episode 16, “The Accident,” we learn a little about how a family should run.

Hear me out.

I know, I know. Mickey and Jimmy are essentially criminals. Minus the essentially. Or, as Jimmy put it:

“You know what I always say – you gotta break the law to do the right thing.”

Sabrina is a stuck-up party girl and Chip is a delusional rich kid.

Ben is the baby who everyone dotes on but no one feeds correctly.

And…Alba is Alba.

But they love each other.

Mickey and Jimmy are the perfect crazy parents.  They are willing to do anything for their kids – even when they call from a sleepover in the middle of the night.

Below the absurd level of physical comedy (and it is truly an absurd level — Mickey falls off the roof and is immediately hit by a car, for example) “The Accident” is surprisingly heartwarming.

Like old-school-Disney-movie heartwarming. Like old-people-holding-hands heartwarming. Like Christmas-morning-in-the-80’s heartwarming.

“The Accident” just makes me feel good.

For one, Mickey, Jimmy, and Alba all work together to not only get Ben invited to the sleepover, but also to save his rep when he wets the bed (by peeing on all the kids, because, it’s The Mick). There is something decidedly wholesome about a group of people who aren’t actually Ben’s parents rallying around him like this.

They spend their entire night doing what Ben needs. They take an, um, unconventional approach, but Ben is loved and supported so it works.

It’s easy to take this for granted as a convenient plot point. The whole premise of the show is that Mickey got left with these kids cause her sister is an idiot. Which is hilarious, of course.

But, that doesn’t negate that the premise of the show is also that Mickey (and by association Jimmy) cares about these kids enough to take on full-time parenting with very few qualms.

Sure, the premise allows for some really hilarious episodes. I’m just saying that it also kinda makes this show a wholesome family comedy for the modern day.

Basically, this is our Full House now.

No, really. Think about it. We’ve got aunts and uncles helping raise kids, a group of kids ranging in age, and family drama about issues like sleepovers and fake IDs.

See?

The Mick has just added a little spice to the recipe.

And then we have Chip and Sabrina. Their relationship is what is going to redeem Chip for me.

Through a typical sitcom plot (younger sibling trades a service for access to older sibling coolness) Chip and Sabrina come to a (admittedly flimsy) truce.

Although Sabrina spends most of the episode making fun of Chip, when he asks her if they can be best friends she says yes. She knows the sibling bond runs deep.

Like I said: wholesome.

This is the dysfunctional-yet-loving family America needs.

Plus, Ben is back.

Last week I wrote about how Season 2 Episode 15, “The Juice,” was missing a very key element: Ben.

This week, that’s been rectified and boy is it good. Plus I forgot about his back tat.

I just really feel good about “The Accident.”
