9-1-1 Roundtable: Full Moon (Creepy AF)

9-1-1, Roundtables

The moon is out and it is full on 9-1-1 Season 1 Episode 7, “Full Moon (Creepy AF).” The crazies come out and take our first-responders on a crazy ride for the night.

Buck and Bobby help out with a labor call at a pregnancy yoga class. Meanwhile, Hen and Athena take a call about a woman who sees a man outside her house. Abby finally shows off all her talents as a 9-1-1 dispatcher by helping the further investigation of one of her calls where a woman dies.

Tell-Tale TV Writers Alamin Yohannes, Samantha Coley, and Mary Misasi discuss the episode below.

1. Hen did the voice-over at the beginning and the end. How did this set the tone?

Alamin: It kicked off the episode with me worrying about her. Hen has had a pretty positive story so far and the second I heard her voice I thought her story was going to take a turn. The episode had many crazy moments, but I paid close attention whenever I saw Hen on-screen after hearing the voice-over.

Samantha: I didn’t think much of it when I heard her doing the voice-over at the start. I just thought it was cool that it was Hen doing it this time — I’m all for a queer woman of color getting more screen time.

Mary: I was first interested because it was the first time hearing her do a voice-over. Then I started to worry that something troubling was on the horizon because of how infrequent of a thing this was.

2. Abby was able to flex her muscles, so to speak, this episode. What are your thoughts on her going forward? Do you think this is a better move for her than her actions on her date?

Alamin: I really enjoyed Abby’s story on “Full Moon (Creepy AF)” because it really explored what she can do as a part of her job. Taking her outside the office professionally, like when she saved that child in the pool with Buck, feels like the show wanting more or something different for her in a way.

Since she has not expressed interest in a new career path, finding a way for her to push boundaries at her job to help people is an arc that I really appreciated and enjoyed. She took the initial call and then used her skills to solve a crime and save lives. That’s the type of thing I’d love to see more of when it comes to Abby.

Samantha: I’m seconding Alamin on this one. I loved seeing Abby get to do something more, but still within her job at the call center. Abby’s perspective as the 9-1-1 operator is really the one aspect of this show we haven’t really seen done before and I don’t want to lose that.

So seeing her dive further into it and do even more with it to solve a murder and save a life was really cool.

Mary: I am going to agree with both Alamin and Samantha in that I love the direction this show is taking with Abby. From the beginning, she has been my favorite female and I desire to know more about her.

She is clearly a strong dispatcher and I would love to see her expand on that. This episode really starts that journey. I hope to see them continue this trend and have her work with the police force more to help solve cases involving 9-1-1 calls.

3. What would you like to see Athena do for Hen moving forward?

Alamin: Athena gave Hen advice, and I think she’s done all she can because Hen is an adult who can make her own choices. At this point, it’s up to Hen to make the right choice or wrong one, and Athena to support her friend however she needs.

Samantha:  I really like their friendship a lot, and I’d just like for them to continue that companionship and to continue confiding in each other and helping direct each other’s paths like good friend do.

Mary: While the point Alamin makes is important to discuss, I also think that moving forward Athena can still continue to support her friend. These two women have been standing by each other through hardship and joy.

I think that this should only grow stronger in the episodes to come as the consequences of Hen’s actions come to light. I hope that Athena will remember when she made questionable decisions and still had the support of her friend. They’re going to really need each other to lean on in the days to come.

4. What was your favorite crazy moment from “Full Moon (Creep AF)?”

Alamin: My favorite “Full Moon (Creepy AF)” moment would have to be the scene at the yoga studio where several of the women in the class went into labor. While there were crazier moments, the rest were really dark and heavy. The episode could have used some additional wacky full moon moments in my opinion, but this somewhat humorous scene would have to be my favorite.

Samantha: I also really love the multiple births at the yoga studio, but since Alamin already went there I’ll go with another. I really liked the whole story with the ex-husband being connected to the little old lady from the start of the episode.

I think that when they figured out he was inside her house originally was very creepy and really gave the whole episode that uncomfortable spooky feeling. And then I was glad to see the daughter/ex-wife take him out at the end thanks to Abby’s call.

Mary: My favorite was definitely Abby helping young Nora with her ex-husband. Abby is able to warn her in time to save her life, which made my heart so happy. Not just because the woman survived and took back her life, but because Abby got to show what she’s made of.

My girl is one of the tough ones and has talents that most overlook. The time for overlooking her is over and I couldn’t be happier about that.

5. Finally, there were a couple of hook-ups at the end. What could be the potential consequences for each one?

Alamin: Hen has really put her relationship at risk because she didn’t just cheat, she cheated on her wife with the one person that would do the most damage. It’s very worrying and that scene confirmed my concern about hearing Hen do the voice-over.

As for Abby and Buck, I am hopeful they will have a fun relationship for the time being and I’m happy for them. She needs to have some fun and he needs to grow up a bit. I’m sure there will be some obstacles in their future, but for now, things look hopeful.

Samantha: I loved Abby and Buck finally getting together. I loved him staying the night and Abby’s soft happy smile as they laid together afterward. I like this relationship a lot, and I’m glad they’re fully going there with it. My only concern is that it might have happened too soon for them to last.

With Hen, I’m just really disappointed that this is the storyline she’s getting. As a queer woman myself, I’m just disappointed that this is the direction Ryan Murphy and co. are taking this representation.

I hate the use of the “lesbian bed death” myth and I hate that they’re turning Hen into a cheater. This hook-up took a storyline and a character I was really excited about and turned it into some of the ugliest queer stereotypes.

Mary: I love Abby and Buck as well, but I have stated before that I think this is too much too soon. I continue to stand by that. I worry that them having sex so early in their relationship will end badly. Especially since Buck still struggles with his sex addiction. I really hope I am wrong though because I think they are great for each other.

As for Hen, I will have to agree with Samantha. I really hate that they are taking their one queer main character and taking her down such an ugly path as infidelity. I also don’t like that she is doing it with the one person that will hurt her wife the most.

My other thought on Hen is what these actions may also do to her relationship with her son. I can’t imagine this move is good for him either. Hen has such a strong work and home family that I worry these actions may ruin everything she has worked so hard for.
