Bull Review: Witness for the Prosecution (Season 2 Episode 15)

Bull, Reviews

The team, one member short, must make a liar reveal herself on Bull Season 2 Episode 15, “Witness for the Prosecution.”

With the Olympics over, a lot of our favorite shows are returning, and trying to grab our attention back from athletes performing incredible feats. Bull returns with a murderer faking a mental disorder and the quest to prove her act.

First, let’s address the elephant in the room. We last left with Bull firing Cable, and while that is addressed, it gets less screen time that I would have expected.

The team is divided about Bull’s actions– not about how he does what he what he does, but whether it’s even the right decision in the first place.

“Witness for the Prosecution”– The DA hires Bull to help convict Hazel Diaz (Roma Maffia), an infamous drug dealer who murdered a police officer, but has managed to avoid jail for years on an insanity defense by feigning schizophrenia, on BULL, Tuesday, Feb 27 (9:00-10:00PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. The thing is, however good Cable’s intentions, her mistake is an illegal action that, without the quick actions of the team, would have harmed many people in many ways. Bull’s decision, and even the declaration that she’s lucky to get off so easily, are completely rational, even if not everyone sees it.

However, I still feel that Bull is handling this in a dismissive way that doesn’t fit everything else we’ve seen from him. He seems to ignore the issue for the entire episode, even as the rest of the team discusses it.

I suppose it counts for something that he hasn’t spilled the beans on her to future employers, showing he’s still willing to protect her. Given the way her interview leaves off, though, even that won’t protect her for long.

I see her upcoming troubles finding new employment simply as further confirmation she won’t be away from the offices for long. Now we just have to wonder what’s going to happen when she does come back. They’ll talk about it, yes, but what will they say- and who will admit to any fault?

As for the rest of the episode, the case is fairly well handled. Say what you will about her (and I could say quite a lot about people faking an illness that so affects those who actually suffer from it), Hazel is convincing until the end.

My only real issue, then, is that ending. If this woman has been keeping this act up for years, why in the world would she decide to fake a breakdown at the moment she’s under the most suspicion? She must know she’ll be scrutinized, and Bull blows her act apart immediately.

Is this the same woman who takes on an interrogation that lasts nearly all day with barely a blink? Even the moment Bull uses to call Hazel out in that scene doesn’t seem like enough to disprove her, but a little while later, she admits to her own act.

The most likely explanation is simply the need to give us as dramatic an ending as possible, with Hazel making a scene and Bull being the hero. But we already know Bull will win. Bull always wins– even when he first loses– so is it the extra flair necessary?

  • Roma Maffia gives a performance which is compelling to watch over and over. She is an excellent actor. There are some holes in the story, but that is not my point. Roma is fabulous.
