The Mick Review: The Trip (Season 2 Episode 11)
On The Mick Season 2 Episode 11, “The Trip,” the Pemberton’s don’t seem to have a lot going on.
“The Trip” is hilarious, I’ll give it that. It’s just that it also feels like a bit of a lull for the show. What’s usually so great about The Mick is that it combines a solid storyline with comedy. This episode is just the comedy part.

The individual scenes are funny, but nothing really happens that impacts the characters or plot in any way.
For an episode that is extensively about Sabrina going to Yale, I kinda want more about her going to Yale. The acid trip she goes on is funny – I really love watching them play with paint – but it doesn’t seem to actually do much.

I guess what I mean is that there could have been more.
For example, I would like to see a bit more about how Sabrina is feeling about graduating and going to college. Is she skipping school because she doesn’t want to face reality? Does she take the acid because she doesn’t really want to go to Yale?
“The Trip” doesn’t tap into these kinds of things as well as I would expect for The Mick.
Especially in her actual Yale interview. Did it go okay? Did she blow it? I feel like a scene got accidentally deleted.
We get some feel-good moments about it being about the journey, not the destination; but other than that it just falls a little flat.
It occurs to me that it might feel that way because Jimmy is gone.

A comedy like The Mick is a delicate thing. Each actor needs the others and the entire group built something really great. Does it work without Jimmy?
“The Trip” feels a bit empty and maybe that’s because it is. Maybe it’s because we’re used to seeing Jimmy participate in the drama. He would really have been hilarious tripping on acid in a high school hallway.
Similarly, the Alba storyline is a bit dull. What’s most disappointing about this is that I think Alba wasn’t used to her highest and best here. Chip treating Alba like a maid could have been a lot more than it is. And maybe her cousin could have had to face a bit more adversity before that whole thing wrapped up?
Oh and the pube incident is just too cringe-worthy to even write about.

There is one scene that makes the whole episode worth it, though. Sabrina accidentally walking into the German class is comedy gold. Her reaction to the loudspeaker announcement is just so… pure.
Maybe Sabrina can step up and bridge that gap left by Jimmy. I’ll be curious to see how this shakes out in the coming episodes.
