Lethal Weapon Review: Diggin’ Up Dirt (Season 2 Episode 12)

Lethal Weapon, Reviews

On Lethal Weapon Season 2 Episode 12, “Diggin’ Up Dirt,” Leo and Trish decide to team up, and surprisingly, they are not that bad of a duo. They definitely couldn’t work together all day every day, but they could tackle a case together every now and then.

While Leo is the butt of many jokes, he is a damn good investigator.

There are many sides to Leo, and it’s nice seeing that there is something he is good at. He’s not merely a joke of an attorney that everyone wishes would stop bothering them. He uncovers the motive behind Gene’s murder and solves two cases.

Leo: I’ll admit, I was briefly atop your wife, but it was merely a protective maneuver.

Leo is the one who presents the evidence to Trish and Murtaugh, complete with actual receipts, and uncovers Monica’s murder. I think this makes him MVP of the hour. What do you think?

Trish and Leo doing some of the investigative work is a fun way to shake things up. Murtaugh and Riggs, with the help of the B team, usually are the ones who crack the case. It’s what we expect will happen.

Murtaugh and Riggs do a lot of the leg work this time around.

Somehow, Murtaugh’s car manages to get destroyed, again. Seriously, how many times has he had to get that car fixed? Don’t even get me started on the sad state of Riggs’ phone.

Miranda and her father, Ronnie, make a re-appearance in an unexpected way. They are a byproduct of the investigation, not the focus, which is really nice.

Ronnie just happens to know O’Brien (the councilman). There’s really no cartel connection, and Ronnie isn’t involved in Gene nor Monica’s death at all. It’s all purely coincidental.

Lethal Weapon Diggin Up Dirt Leo

Seeing as to how much time we’ve spent on Miranda and Ronnie, it’s nice that we aren’t tackling another cartel case or anything of the sort. It looks like the cartel’s involved for a moment but that moment passes once the private investigator is spotted at the funeral.

This coincidental connection is an interesting way for us to continue to explore Riggs’ complicated relationship with his father, specifically how he explained it — or in this case didn’t — to Miranda.

This could have merely come up in a session with Cahill, or something else could have prompted Riggs to take a trip down memory lane, but it’s a lot better that Riggs gets to go down this trip with Ronnie. Does anyone else want to see more of Riggs’ therapy sessions?

Ronnie’s death made everyone cry, right? It’s not like Ronnie is a well-liked guy, but he’s Riggs’ only connection to Miranda, and he’s someone who claims Riggs as family, as a son.

Watching Riggs realize that he’s lost someone else is painful. Clayne Crawford delivers yet another phenomenal emotional performance.

Riggs and Miranda will never fail to tug on the heartstrings. Seeing Riggs backslide and start getting drunk again all because he realized that Miranda knew he was lying is heartbreaking.

Murtaugh: She still married you, didn’t she? That means she loved you. Because believe me, if I knew half of what I know about you now, I would’ve run for the hills.

Riggs hates that Miranda knew about his darkness. It’s something he tried, and continues to try, to distance himself from. He’s still trying to keep the people he cares about out of his mess.

Something tells me Riggs will always push people away from his darkness, no matter how close they get or how much they say they want in. Hopefully Riggs will at least let in Murtaugh because he needs someone to wade through the darkness with.
