The Magicians Review: The Losses of Magic (Season 3 Episode 3)
Death comes in a pair of three on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 3, “The Losses of Magic.”
While Alice and Quentin are fighting the lamprey with Alice’s parents, Margo and Eliot are fighting a group of pirates, and Kady + Julia are summoning a demon to save Penny. Times are tough in a world without magic, but these warriors are getting through it one day at a time.
As a niffin, it’s no secret that Alice was a sadistic, vengeful woman high on power who had no care for anyone or anything but herself. This exact reason is why I shouldn’t be so shocked that niffin Alice slaughtered the lamprey’s family, but I am.
I hate seeing Alice call herself the real monster while the niffin is sitting inside of her father. She continues to carry the guilt of everything she did as a niffin, but Alice needs to realize that the things she did were not her.

She was not the one who tracked down and killed the lamprey’s family, and while she does have to pay for her actions as a niffin to the creatures she scorned, Alice needs to come to terms with the fact that she isn’t the same woman who did those horrible things.
Now that Alice has killed her dad I expect to see her in a downward spiral and the only thing that I want to come out of it is Quentin moving on and leaving her alone. She has made it plain and clear multiple times that she isn’t the same girl and that it isn’t going to happen.
The next time Alice has to turn Quentin down because he won’t take no for an answer I want her to slap him. Just hit him right as he asks her out again or even remotely tries to flirt with her. That may be harsh, but he needs to get it through his thick little head that he needs to move on.
I know that Quentin thought Alice would come running back to him because he “saved” her, but it’s been too long for him to be still pursuing her. On top of all of that Quentin is the one who told Alice’s parents that she’s alive. Why? Why could Alice not have shown up and surprised her grieving family? Quentin involves himself in too many things that have nothing to do with him.
Margo is losing her mind having to always watch what she says at all times, day and night, with the fairy queen always lurking about.
I love that the thought of Eliot being in trouble and her not being able to help gets her to stand up to the fairy queen. The fairy queen will always be two steps ahead of her, but for now, Eliot and the rest of the crew are safe and alive.

Margo’s loyalty to Eliot is heart-warming. Her destroying her eye right in front of the fairy queen to show that she can, and will, fight back is admirable. She willingly gave up her other eye for the greater good, and I hope that in the next few episodes she begins getting treated as she deserves.
I can’t begin to describe how happy I am that Kady and Julia are working together again. The two of them have been my favorite group pairing since Season 1 because they fit in with each other so perfectly.
While Kady is only trusting Julia at the moment to try and save Penny’s life, I think that she is beginning to realize that Julia is not the same person that she used to be, and she’s trying to make things work again. Everyone deserves a second chance and Julia should be given exactly that.

Even when Julia didn’t have her shade, she still stole Alice’s shade because she knew how much it meant to Quentin. She saw the error in her ways when she wasn’t whole, and she certainly does now. There’s no other reason why she would she be working so hard to get back in Kady’s good graces.
I can’t make myself believe that Penny could die for good. Now that the cancer was removed too late and Penny’s mortal body has died what else is there for him to do? How is he watching them stand with his body? With magic there’s always a twist, but if Penny is forced to be “dead” for the rest of the season, I’m going to be upset.
Kady and Penny are one of my favorite couples, and the both of them have been through too much for this to be their ending.

This season is terrible. Let’s make a show called The Magicians and then take away magic for the entirety of the 3rd season. What? Who makes these writing decisions?
Everyone has a right to their own opinion and yes, while I may miss the extravagant magic that we’re used to seeing from the show I think that this season is doing great as it has progressed. I think that they’re doing a tremendous job with the character storylines this season. Although, I would love to see more of Margo and for her to have a storyline that doesn’t directly tie to Eliot or the Fairy Queen.
