The Magicians Review: Heroes and Morons (Season 3 Episode 2)

Reviews, The Magicians

Plans are put into motion in Fillory while Julia, Quentin, and Josh look for a magician wrecking havoc in central park on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 2, “Heroes and Morons.”

Josh, Quentin, and Julia’s working relationship fits together so perfectly. I think that my favorite decision in the back end of Season 2 and the beginning of Season 3 is getting Josh more involved with the rest of the crew.

Josh’s personality fits right in with everybody else’s, and he has extensive knowledge of parts of the magic world that they don’t. He’s a necessity, whether they can see it to the full extent or not.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll continue to say it: Margo and Eliot’s relationship is my absolute favorite thing about The Magicians. Margo and Eliot in general are my favorite characters.

No matter how tense things get between each other Margo is always there for him and vice versa. Her openness with Eliot is one of the things I love the most. She cares for him so much, and she knows that she can’t control him and decide what he does, but she worries about him and won’t sugarcoat when she’s scared for him.

Margo and Eliot are each others family through, thick and thin. Lines will be crossed, and feelings will get hurt along the way, but there’s nothing that could happen that would make either drop the other.

I have mixed feelings towards Fray and have a hard time believing that this is Fen and Eliot’s baby. The fairy realm may have time moving at a different speed, but I don’t think that the fairy queen would give them their daughter.

The fairy queen is an evil, vindictive ruler who wants to make sure that magic is not restored to Fillory so why would she willingly give Fen and Eliot their child? It makes no sense because the fairy queen is smart enough to know that Eliot and his friends won’t stop until magic is back everywhere.

Fray also notices that Eliot didn’t collect the taxes like he told the fairy queen he was going to do. All he took was the key, which isn’t smart. I think that throwing Fray into the mix messed with Eliot and he wasn’t thinking straight.

Alice and Quentin’s surprise meeting in an orgy in the middle of central park is NOT how I expect them seeing each other again to go down. Quentin freaks out when he sees her, but he doesn’t freak out like I expect him to. I expected a teary-eyed Quentin standing in disbelief that Alice has come back.

But I like that Quentin doesn’t completely lose his cool, unlike some of the previous times he and Alice have been apart. It means he’s growing as a person and hopefully one day he will be entirely over Alice. Especially with Alice on the run from a lamprey.

As for Penny and Kady? SWOON. Penny thinks that his last moments are upon him and instead of going back to the library where time will stop the cancer progression he patiently sits and waits for Kady because she’s who he wants to be with when he dies.

With the magic battery in Kady’s possession, the cure for Penny’s advanced cancer could be just around the corner.

If I were in Kady’s situation, I wouldn’t trust Julia either. Julia has done so many terrible things it’s going to take Kady some time to warm back up to her.

Other Thoughts:

  • Alice’s cat exploding in the carrier is something that I was entirely not ready for.
  • If Professor Lipson was working with Mayakovsky to make magic batteries why would she not make enough to last her years?
  • I have no idea what jumped inside of Quentin’s body at the end of the episode, but it has to be connected to Alice in some way. The same guy that jumps Quentin in the little tunnel is the same guy who followed Alice down the hallway right after her kitten exploded.
