Chicago Med Review: Speak Your Truth (Season 3 Episode 1)
We’re back, folks!
After such a huge cliffhanger, Chicago Med came back with a bang, literally, in Dr. Charles’s case that is. After many long months of worrying about his fate in just under a minute we find out that yes, after a three-month time jump he’s okay.
Chicago Med Season 3 Episode 1, “Speak Your Truth,” has a lot of different elements, but the show’s romantic pairings take most of the spotlight.
In regards to Ethan and April, their whole relationship is questionable. Ethan is a complete step up and beyond after how Tate treated her last season. Ethan is an incredible doctor and April is an incredible nurse, they’re both also really wonderful people, but their getting together feels random.

From last season, their characters started to have more interaction. I was thinking to myself, good, they’ll have a stronger friendship. However, they appear to make each other happy — so that’s something.
Except, April wants to keep their relationship a secret because of doctor-nurse cliché — or so she says. You can see where she’s coming from, but at the same time it really isn’t a big deal. It seems she has more reasons than what she tells Ethan.
It’s sweet how respectful Ethan is of her. However, when he leaves the hospital, he clearly isn’t happy when April says goodbye to him professionally. That last shot of his face is so sad. He wants her to be happy, but he also wants to be happy and that’s his dilemma with this relationship.
Next, we have Will and Natalie who, after two very long seasons of mixed feelings and different significant others, finally get together.

It was a strong build up of flirty eyes and shy smiles until the very end. It’s certainly a save the best for last type of deal, and it doesn’t disappoint.
This scene is right after April and Ethan’s goodbye, and it was a sort of a parallel. With them, so much was left unsaid, but with Will and Natalie’s goodbye, they don’t hold back.
Will’s confession to her is so pure. His just saying he has feelings for her is so bold compared to the last two seasons. He begs her with his words, almost pleads that she feels the same, because all he wants is her.
Natalie steals the show when she shares that her feelings are mutual and lunges forward, kissing him passionately, freely without worry. This kiss is mutual, and both are ready finally to be with each other.
Natalie: It’s you.
My second favorite couple on the show starts off happy, but of course that doesn’t last. Seeing Connor all smiley and giddy is enough to make anyone’s heart soar. Robin is such a great match for him.

The smile is only temporary, though, as you notice the reality of the situation set in with Robin still having a long way to go.
The two go from honest and giddy to holding back words and tears. The reality of Robin’s situation is still abundantly clear.
Then, of course Dr. Charles comes in to save the day. For Robin to start crying in front of her dad is huge since their relationship is so rocky still, so hopefully his fatherly advice helps her.
Dr. Charles: In my experience, you’re usually pretty safe trusting your heart.
Finally, I have to take a minute to talk about the dynamic between Dr. Reese and Dr. Charles who have always had more of a father/daughter relationship.
She certainly considers him a father especially after that short seen between her and Noah. It seems her real father is in no way in comparison to Dr. Charles.

It’s only been three months, so for Dr. Charles to be testifying at court for the man who shot him is truly amazing. He and Sarah are fighting and not seeing eye to eye. While Sarah looks at the shooting from a rational perspective, Dr. Charles isn’t Yet, he’s thinking it was the other way around.
Their dynamic will be a test this season, especially when it’s clear to see Dr. Charles deals with his emotions about it.
With this being the premire of the third season I’d say we’re off to a really great start. Relationships of all sorts will be tested this season.
Other Thoughts
- Let’s take a moment to talk about the husband and wife in the car accident. That moment when she places her hand on the man’s chest who receives her husband’s heart –the tears were released. That broke me.
- Maggie is still the most amazing head nurse and her above and beyond kindness rubs off on Dr. Stohl
- Dr. Latham and Connor still have a pretty great dynamic.
- Looks like the new cardio doctor is going to be a challenge for Dr. Rhodes.
- It’s so nice seeing Brett from Chicago Fire, even if it is a very short minute.
