The Good Place Review: The Trolley Problem (Season 2 Episode 6)

Reviews, The Good Place

The Good Place Season 2 Episode 6, “The Trolley Problem,” focuses on getting Michael to finally understand ethics, but it doesn’t end up happening the way it’s expected.

I’d be lying if I said that I was shocked when Eleanor calls Michael out about still torturing Chidi. It’s predictable that Michael would resort back to his old ways when he’s not a human and he’s been programmed to torture people for a living.

I am proud of Chidi, though. He never stands up for himself and puts his foot down when he’s irritated and for him to shut Michael down the way he does shows real improvement to his character.

Chidi may be in the bad place and rightfully deserve the torture that Michael is secretly dishing out to him, but Michael is also in need of help, and he seems to forget that every episode.

Michael’s hardwiring may be to torture people and find enjoyment in it, but you’d think that if there were a real possibility he could be torn into a million pieces if figured out he’d get his act together.

I think that watching Michael struggle with his ethics lessons would be more entertaining if Vicky and co were incorporated more instead of Michael continually messing up in the confinements of Chidi’s home.

Seeing the trolley and doctor ethics situations come to life is pretty impressive because it’s something that we’ve all been taught from a young age.

I still don’t care about Tahani and Jason as a couple. I’m not sure what it would take to get me to like Tahani and Jason together, but it would have to be something huge because I just can’t make myself like Jason.

No matter what Jason does, I continue to find him incredibly annoying and not needed. Tahani and Jason is that storyline you see on shows where the only thing you can think is “wow, there was absolutely nothing else they could do with these characters?”

I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I’d rather watch Eleanor and Tahani be soulmates and have to navigate around keeping up the charade.

It never crossed my mind that with Janet using her powers so much to learn more about the human side of things she’d begin to break down.

If Janet was stolen from the good place and sent as a disguise for Eleanor and co wouldn’t that mean that doing human things shouldn’t mess her up? That’s how she’s already wired so why would everything in this world be going abnormally if she’s doing what she’s programmed to do?

I am enjoying this season, but I hope that it begins to pick up the pace a little bit more in the upcoming episodes.

Other Thoughts:

  • A shrimp dispensary is something that lives in my dreams and I wish was real.
  • I want Chidi to make the rap musical and make Michael perform it.

Favorite Quotes:

  • “He’s just a bunch of evil shoved up the butt of an evil mannequin. Teaching him to be good is like teaching me not to be hot. How would you even do it? I can’t even picture it because I’ve been hot my whole life.” – Eleanor
  • “Nobody try mystery flavor. It’s white chocolate, and it is nasty.” – Eleanor
