The Mick Review: The Haunted House (Season 2 Episode 4)

Reviews, The Mick, Uncategorized

On The Mick Season 2 Episode 4, “The Haunted House,” the gang delivers the classic Halloween episode, and it’s pretty great.

I’m not usually a big fan of holiday themed episodes that veer from the storyline, but this works so well for The Mick. Not a ton happens to develop characters or the plot (aside, maybe, from the fact that Sabrina’s going to have to drop out of school) but I don’t even care because each scene is more hilarious than the last.

Here are a few of my favorite moments from the episode.

“I Will Drink Your Blood”

Alba and Micky as two pitchers no one has ever heard of, turned neighborhood security guards, is epic. This may be the best either character has ever been. Micky’s insistence that the neighborhood hooligans be punished is basically everything. She gets so mad and I’m so here for it. I can’t believe she actually makes a bunch of kids eat raw eggs. Except I can. Micky knows no bounds.

Garbage Person

I love the idea of picking each other’s costumes. Jimmy as “garbage” is pretty spot on. He’s also the best he’s ever been in this episode. It makes total sense that Halloween is his jam. He out-Jimmy’s himself.

Alba’s Pumpkin

I don’t think I talk about Alba enough. She’s really so great. In a show full of over-the-top characters, she’s quiet and steady. And hilarious. Drinking out of a pumpkin is such a subtle, genius detail this week.

Chip in a Cage

Less subtle is Chip getting put in a cage. Just like it makes total sense that Micky and Jimmy love Halloween, it tracks that Chip hates it. Chip hates fun. Chip loves authority. I love seeing Chip locked in a cage for an entire episode. I honestly wish someone had done it sooner.

Zombie Ben

The only bummer of the episode is that Ben doesn’t have a bigger role. The small part he does play is great, though. Ben as a candy zombie is another moment where he really shines.

Sabrina’s Moment

Speaking of moments, boy does Sabrina have one. It’s so typical for holiday shows to be overly referential that it doesn’t really make sense that stuffing a bunch of high school cliches into an episode of a bunch of Halloween cliches would work. But it does. And it works because Sabrina sells it. She’s been teetering toward destruction for awhile, and her blaze of glory is almost too glorious. Almost. I’m genuinely interested to see where she goes from here.

Halloween episodes are usually throw-away episodes for shows. They are a chance to be silly outside of the structure of the show.

For The Mick, however, the usual Halloween tropes allow each character to really, really shine. I’m pleasantly surprised by how well The Mick committed to doing a holiday episode right.
