The Mist Review: The Law of Nature (Season 1 Episode 8)

Reviews, The Mist

While The Mist Season 1 Episode 8, “The Law of Nature,” isn’t perfect by any means, there are surprises as we head towards a major showdown between the groups.

It’s hard to believe, but The Mist righted itself after a few horrible episodes. The tension we saw in the beginning of the season returned, and I actually want to see how it all ends.

Not to say there aren’t some eye-rolling moments, but there is more good to the hour than bad.

Secrets are revealed, connections are made, and people die. And the two people behind all this havoc are Alex and Jay. They have no idea what’s happening, but they have become magnets for the crazy, and everybody is headed their way.

Nathalie believes she is the messenger of Mother Nature and has been given the green light to punish on her behalf. What Natalie creates instead is her own demented cult — fanaticism at its worst.

Her crying about air pollution is one of those eye-rolling moments, not because air pollution and environmental protection aren’t important, but the way it is done is out of place. It seems like an interruption rather than part of the story.

Despite that, the way Nathalie’s story has developed is a nice nod to the movie. There’s a parallel to Mrs. Carmody, but Nathalie is much worse. Not only did she kill a bunch of people who didn’t follow her lead, she’s on a mission to kill a few more, or at least one person in particular.

Nathalie isn’t the only crazy on Jay’s scent. Adrian is bringing his own brand of crazy to the party. He walks over the edge of insanity this hour, and Kevin pays the price.

It’s goofy that the group ends up on the street where Adrian lives. I don’t even remember them getting in the car from the hospital, but I’ll go with it. Still, this part of the hour seems the most contrived and predictable.

First off, who wouldn’t smell a decaying body when they walk into the house? Second, as soon as he grabs the shotgun, it is obvious what’s going to happen. And Adrian completely losing it and confessing to Kevin about the rape seems forced.

The only purpose to that shocker is to create a situation for Kevin’s death. And let’s not even get started on the eye-rolling moment of Jonah and Mia having sex in the garage. Wouldn’t they have heard the shotgun blasts, or were they so into what they were doing they couldn’t hear anything? Seems pretty unrealistic to me.

I don’t believe Kevin is dead. Someone has to save Alex because Eve is doing a pretty shitty job right now. All Eve cares about is keeping Jay away from her daughter. She’s not looking at the bigger picture of how to protect themselves from the crazies on the other side of the mall.

Gus killing Shelly is a surprise, but once again the mist is doing its thing. It’s making people act irrationally, and Gus needs to keep his secret, but I have to wonder if the security guard is convinced about Gus’ story.

Still, the group needs someone to blame, and the overall story will not move forward if Alex doesn’t become the target along with Jay.
