The Bold Type Review: The End of the Beginning (Season 1 Episode 8)

Reviews, The Bold Type

As The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 8, “The End of the Beginning,” puts all of the chips in place for the last two episodes before the mid season hiatus, the progression of the overall narrative moves a bit slow, while Kat, Sutton, and Jane’ separate stories inch forward.

Kat gets a promotion and a second chance with Adena, Jane gets a job offer at Insight and Sutton stays cool under pressure and proves herself in a high-intensity photo shoot.

Initially, Jane is resistant to leave Scarlet. However, with layoff rumors swirling and opportunity knocking, she takes a leap and gets the job offer. The episode leaves us wondering if she will take it or not.

But knowing Jane, she’s staying at Scarlet with mother Jacqueline and her best friends. No question. This is a good and a bad thing though.

It’s good because she will be the front-runner of the politics section of Scarlet when it takes off. It’s a bad thing because there’s no telling when this will happen and if there will ever be a similar film deal on the table like the one Insight offers.

So, although I know Jane will be staying, I hope we can see her make that decision. Not out of pure loyalty, but because she feels it will be the best thing for her, as well.

Sutton tries to do what’s best for herself throughout The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 8, but getting over someone you love isn’t easy. Especially when you both broke up because it was the wrong time and not the wrong person.

Poor Sutton. She even makes the “I’m missing you” voicemail. Usually, with our generation, it’s a “wyd” text or something similar. However, I love that The Bold Type includes that part because it isn’t realistic for her not to second guess her decision and feel some type of way about it.

But it definitely is the right thing that they broke up. Richard could lose his job and his way of life, while the magazine world could brand Sutton as the girl who sleeps her way to the top. Not only that, but there are a lot of life decisions that go with a couple so far apart in age.

Do they talk about children? What about flexibility in living location, drugs, etc. Sutton’s so young and she’s experimenting, whereas, Richard has been there and done that already.

So, it is the right decision, now it’s just how about how well they will stick to their guns and move on.

On a happier note, I’m proud to see Sutton take the reins in a photo shoot. Usually, it’s Sutton second-guessing herself. However, in “The End of the Beginning,” her character continues to show the growth with her level of self-confidence.

When Cassie crumbles, Sutton thrives in the spotlight, proving who is the real number 1 out of all the fashion assistants. In The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 5, She tells Oliver she will prove she is invaluable to his team and she’s doing that at every turn.

There will definitely be a bonus in her future.

Speaking of bonuses, Kat gets a huge promotion this episode, and she deserves it. The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 7 showed us she has the chops to be a boss, while this episode proves she can get the job done when she needs to.

The future is a woman with social media prowess, and I have no doubts Kat can rise to the occasion. I just hope she doesn’t get spooked like she does with other big commitments. She mentions to Adena that she already feels a little trapped in all of her responsibilities.

Now that she’ll be the head of an expanding department, who knows how Kat’s radical mind will process this promotion.

On the same thread of Kat and Adena’s relationship, their interactions and resulting angst in this episode keep it from being a complete bore.

Every time Kat and Adena talk I fall in love with them more and more. They have way too much potential and passion to let that go without giving it a chance. This episode shows how Kat and Adena are already completely open with one another, emtionally and psychologically.

And we already know the physical attraction and chemistry is off the charts. So, Adena and Kat owe it to themselves to see where this goes or they will always regret not doing so.

Other than the Kat and Adena scenes and the parts that show Sutton taking charge, was anyone else bored with this episode? I know the girls would never get fired from Scarlet and I don’t really care for the Sutton and Richard relationship, so I didn’t feel much angst there either.

The dating app story seems almost pointless when you think about what it did for the narrative. Sutton still misses Richard, Jane is still single and ready to mingle, and Kat still ends up with Adena.

So why show us those scenes? Just to reaffirm what we already know?

What is missing in The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 8 is the risk. There’s a lot we know won’t happen because everything always ends up happy in the end. So, there isn’t much that gives me angst as the episodes go by. When they come across an obstacle, it’s always a neat escalation, climax, and falling action-sequence until everything ends hunky-dory.

I know every episode can’t be perfect. Ratio wise, The Bold Type has way more amazing episodes than boring or badly executed episodes. I can just tell that this episode is more meant to set up the next two episodes. And resultingly, there isn’t much to run home and tell mother about.

Let’s hope the penultimate episode delivers what we spent this entire episode building toward.
